Looking up to the Gods

Pranav Dhanawade has just etched his name in the history books, perhaps for generations to come judging by how long it took to break the record he broke. Pranav scored 1009 runs in a performance which will proably define him for the rest of his life. This kind of achievement is something you put on top of your resume. His performance seems even more magnificient when you consider the following factors. Here are five things to know about Pranav Dhanwade’s monumental effort:

#1 59 sixes

Looking up to the Gods

Pranav amassed 354 of his runs through sixes, knocking 59 out of the boundary. This accounted for 35% of his total score. Trying to hit a six is a risky shot, the difficulty increases manifold when you are trying to preserve your wicket.

Back in 1948 when BB Nimbalkar made 443* in Ranji trophy vs Kathiawar, they chose to forfeit the match. Pranav’s performance came against against Arya Gurukul School, Kalyan. The opponents, to their credit, did not forfeit the match.

#2 129 fours

Pranav hoisted on the shoulders of a cheering public

Pranav hit 129 fours accounting for 516 runs of his 1009 run total. This accounted for 51% of his run total. He scored a whooping 313 runs between the wickets. That speaks volumes about his resilience and stamina. Taking runs is nerve wracking to begin with, it is a whole another matter when you are chasing a thousand.

#3 323 balls

Scorecard

1009 off 323 balls is nothing to sneeze at. Once you take into account the runs obtained off boundaries, this feat becomes more impressive. He hit a boundary on 188 deliveries. That left him with 135 deliveries to amass 139 runs. That’s an average of almost a run per ball without hitting a boundary. His team finished with 1465 runs on the back of his stellar performance. Pranav was ably supported by the batsman on the other end of the crease in obtaining those runs.

#4 652 runs on the opening day

Pranav poses with the scoreboard on Day 1

On the opening day of the U-16 HT Bhandari Trophy Inter-School Cricket Tournament, Pranav scored an incredible 652 runs on just 199 balls. His Day 2 performance was no fluke, he had anticipated scoring over 1000 runs. Pranav said “I will give it a try, I am confident that I can do it. If I can score 600 runs in two sessions, I am confident of scoring 350 in one session. I will definitely try to score 1,000 runs as I am just 350 away.”

#5 117 year old record broken

A.E.J. Collins held the previous record of 628*

Pranav Dhanade broke a 117 year old record of A.E.J. Collins. Collins was just 13 years old when he scored 652 runs in a house match at Clifton college back in june 1899. He took four days to amass that total. Collins later decided to not pursue a career in sports, opting to enlist in the army instead. It is said that he was perturbed by the attention and fame his performance drew. It is understandable for a 13 year old boy to be overwhelmed by the attention before he learns how to deal with attention. Let’s hope Pranav is able to maintain an insulating layer in his daily life.
