Phoenix Suns v Portland Trail Blazers
Phoenix Suns v Portland Trail Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers will take on the Phoenix Suns on Friday. Both Western Conference squads won their opening contests, which were decided in the final minutes. The Blazers beat the Kings on the road 115-108 to kickstart their campaign, and now they'll return home to host last year's top-seeded Western Conference team. The Suns came back from a 22-point third-quarter deficit to win over the Mavericks 109-107 via a Damion Lee fadeaway with 9.7 seconds remaining. Phoenix has dominated Portland over the last couple of years, so we'll see if this trend continues tonight.

Phoenix Suns vs. Portland Trail Blazers Key Stats

The Suns led the NBA in field goal percentage and finished fifth in team points per game. Devin Booker led the way with 26.8 points per game last year, and future-hall-of-famer Chris Paul, who is in his 18th season, is still one of the best point guards around. Paul led the NBA with 10.8 assists per game last year, and he's arguably the best passer in the league right now. Phoenix has pretty much the same roster, with center DeAndre Ayton having just signed a max contract extension in the offseason. Jae Crowder, who regularly started for Phoenix, is no longer with the team, but he's been replaced by Cameron Johnson, who might be just as good, if not better, than Crowder. Phoenix has a high-functioning offense, and defensively wing Mikal Bridges and the Suns have great chemistry.

Portland had a disappointing 2021-22 campaign, and at the trade deadline, they let go of several key players, including longtime shooting guard CJ McCollum. Still, this year the Blazers have star point guard Damian Lillard back after he missed a big chunk of last season due to injury. His supporting cast comprises of veteran center Jusuf Nurkic and guard Anfernee Simons, who is coming off a breakout season. Offensively, the Blazers should be fine, led by Lillard, who averaged 28.8 points in his last full season. Defensively there are some question marks, but wing Josh Hart and new acquisition Jerami Grant should provide help on that end.

Phoenix Suns vs. Portland Trail Blazers Betting Prediction

The Suns lost last year's Western Conference Semi-Finals in seven games and got their revenge against the Mavericks on Wednesday. They'll look to carry this momentum into Portland against a team they've gone 9-3 against the spread in their last 12. Back the visitors to assert their dominance early, and look for the over to hit because of the past 11 meetings in Portland, eight have gone over.

Prediction: Suns -5 (-110) & Over 224 (-110)
