Michigan is ranked 22nd in the country, and last year they finished at 19-15, and they made a nice run in the NCAA tournament. As a #11 seed, Michigan advanced to Sweet 16 before getting knocked off by Villanova, who were the #2 seed in the South Regional. For the visiting Mastodons, who compete in the Horizon League conference, they went 21-12 overall and failed to make the NCAA tournament or the NIT tournament, so they instead were placed in the CBI. Michigan has five new freshmen coming in, and they have one of the best-recruiting classes in the Big Ten. The Wolverines also have transfer guard Jaelin Llewellyn now, who came over from Princeton, where he spent the previous three years. Llewellyn averaged 15.7 points and 4.1 rebounds last year, and he'll be joining returning center Hunter Dickinson, who averaged 18.6 points, 8.6 boards, and 2.3 assists last season. Freshman forward Jett Howard and freshman guard Dug McDaniel should see a lot of minutes too, and they'll look to make a good first impression tonight. The Wolverines had a nice tournament run last season, but they'll need to be more consistent throughout the year for this campaign, and that will be determined by how long it takes for this new group of players to mesh.

Purdue FW has a lot of returning starters, highlighted by last year's leading scorer guard Jarred Godfrey, as well as Damian Chong-Qui and several other key players. Also, transfer wing Anthony Roberts joins the Mastodons after lighting up Division II Basketball last season for Saint Cloud State. This is definitely a tough first tough for the visitors, but their experience and familiarity with one another is something they have working in their favor.
