The 9-1 Tennessee Volunteers have been led by an elite defensive unit. The Volunteers currently rank third out of 363 teams in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 51.4 points per game. Their defensive rating, 73.7, has been the best in college basketball thus far.

The Volunteers are coached by Rick Barnes, who is in his eighth year with the program after spending the previous seventeen years coaching the Texas Longhorns.
