05 Mar 2011, 01:08 IST

The ICC world cup has lived up to the expectations as we approach the middle of the tournament. 19 matches have been played in the world cup so far and we have seen some great cricketing action. The India-England tie was definitely one of the talking points of the tournament. So was the victory of the minnow Irish team over the fancied Englishmen. However apart from the Irish performance, most of the minnows have performed below par and suddenly the big boys are the ones taking the headlines. Here is a compilation of the team of the tournament at this stage of the world cup.

Has probably been one of the contenders for batsmen of the tournament with some breathtaking performances at the top of the order. His most memorable innings was the 158 he scored en-route to help England clinch a draw against India.

Runs Scored – 280 ( 3 Matches )

Batting Average – 93.33

His 175 against Bangladesh set the tone for the tournament. Since then a lot of big scores have been scored and the bat has tamed the ball on most occasions.

Runs Scored – 210 ( 2 Matches )

Batting Average – 105

Sangakarra hasnt set the stage on fire in this tournament so far but he is very close to his belligerent best. Even in the match against Pakistan which Srilanka lost , he was one of their best batsmen. There is no doubt that SriLanka depend a lot on their captain.

Runs Scored – 168 ( 3 Matches )

Batting Average – 84

Has been undoubtly the batsmen of the tournament so far. Two matches , two centuries and two MOM says it all. The world cup is the biggest event in cricket and he had showed that he means business this time. With him in form SA can look at casting off their chokers tag.

Runs Scored – 241 ( 2 Matches )

Batting Average – 241

Came to the tournament as probably the world’s best all rounder. And he has done a lot to enhance this reputation. No wonder he is the heart and soul of this Australian team.

Runs Scored – 141 ( 2 Matches )

Batting Average – 70.50

The batting leader of the Pakistan team. He has been the most consistent  Pakistan batsmen in the world cup. His calm presence in the middle has helped the team to do well.

Runs Scored – 185 ( 3 Matches )

Batting Average – 92.50

Leading from the front , he became the first bowler to take 4 or more wickets in three consecutive matches in a world cup. No wonder he doesn’t practice his batting anymore. With a bowler like him in the team you don’t need to.

Wickets – 14 ( 3 Matches )

Economy Rate – 2.60

Has been the linchpin of the Australian bowling attack in this tournament taking 4 wickets in both the matches they have played. While Lee and Tait have troubled the batsmen with their pace , its Johnson who has been chipping away with wickets.

Wickets – 8 ( 2 Matches )

Economy Rate – 2.81

Spinners were expected to do well in this tournament and he has proved this cliche right. Has been a revelation in this tournament with his bowling. This left arm spinner has certainly set the right signals going forward.

Wickets – 8 ( 3 Matches )

Economy Rate – 4.06

Credited with the first hat-trick of the tournament , he has lead the West Indies bowling remarkably well.  Has chipped in with wickets at crucial times in the tournament so far.

Wickets – 10 ( 3 Matches )

Economy Rate – 3.91

In the team because of the sheer impact in one of the matches he played in. Showed how much SriLankan bowling miss him when he  single handedly destroyed the Kenya team. Best figures of the tournament so far in the SriLankan’s kitty.

Wickets – 6 ( 1 Match )

Economy Rate – 4.95
