Manchester United off to a perfect start.

Manchester United defeated newly promoted Newcastle comfortably by 3-0 to get their season off to a perfect start. With Chelsea winning comfortably against Wigan, it was United’s turn to light up the Old Trafford with a clinical display. It could have been a big win for United had it not been for a couple of misses from Berbatov. With Wayne Rooney yet to rediscover his form, Berbatov made a telling contribution to the United attack and opened the scoring in the 33rd minute.

Darren Fletcher doubled the lead with a close-range effort in the 41st minute. Newcastle looked lively in the early moments of the game with Andy Carrol wasting the best chance for the team when he directed his header wide. As the game progressed Manchester United gained incisiveness with Paul Scholes virtually being the centre of all attacks. He was ably supported by Nani and Evra.

In the second half the game was further dominated by the Manchester United as they enjoyed a healthy possession. With Newcastle being more content in defending, Berbatov had a nice exchange with Scholes to be one on one with the keeper but he narrowly missed his effort. Berbatov was again denied by some impressive goalkeeping from the Newcastle custodian. An off-colour Rooney was substituted in the 63rd minute by United new recruit Javier Hernandez, while Nani made way for Giggs.

Giggs instantly made his prescence fell with a superb pass to Berbatov who was only denied by impressive defending. In the 85th minute Giggs volleyed the third goal for United from a Paul Scholes pass to set up a perfect start for the season.
