Sehwag to miss the rest of the IPL

Big blow!: The possibilities of Sehwag participating in the tour of West Indies and England are very thin

In what is a huge blow to the Delhi Daredevils team and fans alike, Virender Sehwag has been ruled out from the rest of the ongoing IPL tournament as he is to undergo a surgery in his right shoulder. James Hopes has been named the skipper for Delhi Daredevils, for the rest of the season.

Sehwag has been laboring a shoulder-injury ever since ICC T20 World Cup 2009 which prevented him from taking part in it. Even then as it got better, he could continue only with his batting but was unable to bowl.

Sehwag missed the ODI series against South Africa (December-January) for the same reason but was declared fit in time for the World Cup after having undergone rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

“It will be a miracle if he plays another match,” PB Vanchi, director of GMR Sports, owners of Delhi Daredevils, said.

Sehwag is now the leading run scorer and also the orange cap holder in this edition of the Indian Premier league. However his Delhi team has put up an abysmal performance (with seven points in the points table) and the prospects of a semifinal spot are very bleak, given that they will be without their swashbuckling opener.

Vanchi said the decision was taken after Sehwag held talks on his injury with the BCCI, who advised him to undergo surgery as soon as possible.

The owner has also held talks with Sehwag and said he is expected to travel London at the earliest.

“He has a problem, he struggled in the last match too. The BCCI is making the arrangements for the surgery,” Vanchi said.

“They are waiting for a date. If he needs surgery we are not going to be coming in the way.”

Having said this, it is very unlikely that he will take part in the tour of West Indies and England. “The possibility of Sehwag missing the England tour is high,” the source said.
