1981: Birth of Jurgen Melzer, an Austrian tennis player. He reached a career-high ranking of World No. 8 on 18 April 2011, and a doubles ranking of World No. 6 on 13 September 2010.

1987: Birth of Novak Djokovic, a Serbian professional tennis player who is ranked World No. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals.

Football

1946: Birth of George Best, who was a Northern Irish professional footballer who played as a winger for Manchester United and the Northern Ireland national team.

1969: Estudiantes won their second Copa Libertadores, beating Nacional 2-0 in the final’s second leg.

2008: Veteran goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer ended an 11-year association with Middlesbrough to join Fulham.

Cricket

1879: Birth of Warwick Armstrong, an Australian cricketer who led Australia to the first whitewash in Ashes history.

1945: With the end of the Second World War, first-class cricket could resume in England after a five-year hiatus.

1965: Birth of Clare Taylor, the first England woman player to reach 100 international wickets and was the second highest wicket-taker overall at the World Cup in 2000.

Boxing

1993: Riddick Bowe TKOs Jesse Ferguson in 2 for Heavyweight boxing title.
