1987 – Birthday of Lionel Messi, Argentina and Barcelona striker, considered the best footballer of this era alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

1978 – Birthday of Juan Roman Riqulme, Argentina and Boca Juniors midfielder, formerly played for Barcelona and Villarreal.

1992 – Birthday of David Alaba, Austria and Bayern Munich midfielder, youngest player to debut for Austria(at the age of 17).

Cricket:

1974 – India’s lowest test score ever was registered as they were dismissed for 42 runs against England at the Lord’s.

1938 – The first telelvised test match, between Australia and England at the Lord’s.

1986 – Birthday of Stuart Broad, English fast bowler, England’s T20 captain.

1985 – Birthday of Vernon Philander, South African pacer, who was the second fastest to reach 50 wickets in Test cricket.

Tennis:

2010 – The longest tennis match ever played, John Isner beat Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-3) and 70-68, in over 11 hours.
