#10 Diego Maradona

Arguably the greatest footballer to have ever played the game, Diego Maradona made hundreds of millions during his playing days. However, in 2009 it was announced that the Napoli and Argentina hero owed US$54 million to the Italian Inland Revenue. El Diego is still paying the authorities back till today.

Mike Tyson is perhaps the most famous riches-to-rags story. The boxing legend made over $300 million during his career but still filed for bankruptcy in 2003 with a $27 million debt.

#8 Bjorn Borg

Bjorn Borg’s company, Bjorn Borg Design Group, filed for bankruptcy in 1989 and Bjorn was forced to sell his house to pay off his debt. Borg had also planned to auction his Grand Slam trophies and racquets in order to pay his debts in 2007 before moving to tax-free Monaco.

Evander Holyfield, the only 4-time World Heavyweight Champion, had amassed a fortune totalling nearly $250million (£153m) from his boxing career and other exploits, but he was declared bankrupt by a Georgia court in 2008.

Scottie Pippen, the Chicago Bulls legend, is believed to have blown away $120 million with irresponsible and lacklustre financial decisions. Pippen was widely reported to have filed for bankruptcy in 2011.
