Harshit Kaur Jawanda lifts Girls U-17 title in Penang

Harshit Kaur Jawanda beat Nazihah Hanis 11/8 11/13 11/9 11/4 to win the Girls Under-17 title at the 11th Malaysia Junior Open in Penang, Malaysia.

At the state-of-the art Nicol David International Squash Centre, Harshit Kaur Jawanda started well, taking the first game to 8, but the top seed Nazihah Hanis fought back superbly in the second game. In a see-saw battle, Harshit Kaur could not take her chances and the Malaysia girl from Kedah levelled the match at a game apiece. Harshit Kaur, who was part of the Indian team that won the Asian Team Championship in February, raised her game to win another closely fought game 11/9. The loss of the third game appeared to have hit the Malaysian hard as she put up little resistance in the fourth, allowing the Indian lass to clinch the Girls Under-17 division title.

Mayuri came through a tough battle against Natasha Chin 8/11 13/11 8/11 12/10 11/2 to take 7th place in the same division. In the Girls Under-19 division, Lakshya Raghavendran saw off the challenge from Mao shi Yuan of singapore 11/8 11/5 12/10 to take 9th spot. Sachika Ingale beat team mate Vishrutyi Sahni 11/4 11/5 11/5 to finish 11th while Anandita Gupta finished 14th. Megha Bhatia beat Anis Sofea 11/3 11/8 11/6 to finish 7th in Girls Under-11 division while Janina Singh beat Rachel Kong 11/8 11/6 11/5 to finish 11th and Ananya Morey finished 16th. S. Samita beat Ainin Sofea 11/1 11/4 11/2 to finish 25th while Iman Jaikishan was 29th in Girls Under-13 division.

Akanksha Saluke beat Teh Min En 12/10 10/12 6/12 12/10 11/5 in a humdinger to take 5th place in Girls Under-15. Nehaarika Balamurukan beat Jean Won Zhi Xuan 11/9 6/11 5/11 11/6 11/9 to finish 7th. Ashita Bhengra beat Aisyah Munirah 11/7 5/11 14/12 11/9 to take 9th place in the final standings. Riddhi Sampat and Mahima Gupta were placed 26th and 27th respectively.

Robin Mann and Navaneeth Prabhu edged out of medals in thrillers

Indian duo of Robin Mann and Navaneeth Prabhu lost out on bronze medals in tense games that went down to the wire in the Boys Under-15 and Under-11 divisions respectively. Both the players were unlucky to miss out in the final having lost their respective semifinals against top seeds in similar fashion on Saturday.

In U-11, Milo Junior Open runner-up Navaneeth Prabhu was denied a second consecutive medal in a nail-biter against Duncan Lee Yung Yii of Malaysia. Navaneeth Prabhu twice came back from a game down to level the match, but was denied in a tense final as he lost the last game 11/9 to finish 4th in Boys Under-11 division. Navaneeth Prabhu lost 7/11 11/6 6/11 12/10 9/11 but definitely enhanced his credentials as a top talent for the future. Tanay Punjabi beat Choo Wan Jian to finish 9th.

Robin Mann lost his second consecutive five-game thriller to finish outside the medals in Boys Under-15 division. Robin Mann lost 8/11 11/5 11/7 3/11 8/11 to Ong Sai Hung of Kedah in the bronze medal play-off. Mann recovered from the loss of the first game to clinch the next two and looked the favourite to win the medal. But the Malaysian youngster raced away with the fourth game and nicked the final game to deny Robin what would have been a hard-earned medal. Krish Kapur beat Vikas Mehra 11/7 10/12 11/6 12/10 to finish 5th. Abhay Singh finished in 9th place making it 4 Indians in the top 10 of this division.

Guhan Senthilkumar beat Timothy Leong of Singapore 11/8 2/11 11/6 6/11 11/7 to take 11th place in Boys Under-19 division. Velavan Senthilkumar finished 7th in Boys Under-17 with a 11/8 11/5 7/11 11/8 win over Rohan Toole of Australia. Mudit Pant finished 15th and Mradul Agarwal took 17th place in the final rankings in Boys Under-17.In Under-13 division, Pranav Visvesh beat Muhammad Aqif Azahari 11/4 11/5 11/4 to finish 7th.
