Shamini Kumaresan wins gold medal at Luspfonia Games

Shamini Kumaresan bagged the gold medal in the women’s individual table tennis event at the 2014 Lusofonia Games.

She defeated Madhumita Patkar in the final, 5-11, 11-5, 11-7, 5-11, 11-7 and 11-3.

Madhumita Patkar had initially defeated Ankita Das in the first semi final 11-6, 12-14, 5-11, 11-8, 11-13, 11-6, 11-6 and Kumaresan defeated Portugal’s Andre Recauel by 11-9, 11-7, 11-6, 12-10. Das, the top seed, won the bronze medal match defeating Andre Recauel.

Shamini had led the silver medal winning Indian team at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

In other matches on the men’s side, national champion Soumyajeet Ghosh defeated Diago Pinho of Portugal by 11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 11-4 and 11-8 on the way to semis.
