Asian Table Tennis Championships: Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee end campaign with historic bronze

Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee’s impressive run at the Asian Table Tennis Championships has concluded with a bronze medal. The duo went down fighting in the semifinals to Japan's Miwa Harimoto and Miyuu Kihara on Sunday (October 13).

The two Mukherjees were splendid in their display as part of Team India throughout the competition, helping the nation to a historic bronze. They then managed to keep up that momentum for their individual matches.

The duo began their women's doubles campaign at the Asian Table Tennis Championships with a dominant win over Magdieva Markhabo and Kamalova Arujan. The Indians downed the Uzbeks 11-3, 11-6, 11-4, and later dealt a similar fate to Kazakhstan’s Akasheva Zauresh and Mirkadirova Sarvinoz.

Ayhika and Sutirtha’s first difficult match in Astana came in the quarterfinals, when they fought their way back from a game down to beat South Korea's Kim Nayeong and Lee Eunhye. Despite a slow start, they eventually persevered to win 10-12, 11-7, 11-9, 11-8.

On Sunday, the Indian pair fell short against Japan's Miwa Harimoto and Miyuu Kihara 4-11, 9-11, 9-11, to conclude their campaign with a historic bronze.

Asian Table Tennis Championships: Ayhika Mukherjee's individual campaigns

Outside of claiming podium finishes in both the team events as well as the women's doubles, Ayhika Mukherjee also put up quite the display in her singles matches. The Indian opened her campaign with a win over North Korea's Cha Su Yong. The next encounter proved to be difficult for the 27-year-old, as she failed to get past Japan's Ito Mima.

However, Mukherjee redeemed herself in the 17-32 position matches, coming from a game down to beat Thailand's Sawettabut Suthasini 4-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-5.

For Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee, their campaign at the Asian Table Tennis Championships has been nothing short of phenomenal, yielding two podium finishes, both of which mark a first for the sport in India.
