Katie Hursey made a name for herself on Sunday with her first World Cup title in Palamos, Spain.

In her rookie elite triathlon season, the American outran an experienced field to top the podium.

Out of the water first following the two-lap beach swim were local hope Carolina Routier and Britain’s Lucy Hall.

But Hursey, her fellow American Erin Jones and Natalie Milne swiftly caught up to form a five-woman leading pack on the bikes.

Hursey then made her running background count.

The rookie triathlete took off and never looked back on the three-lap course.

Italy’s Annamaria Mazzetti and Australia’s Tamsyn Moana-Veale both made up a sizeable gap off the bike to run themselves onto the podium.

“I loved the course. From when I got here it was like, this is my type of course. It had the hill – I kind of thought it was like Edmonton (ITU Triathlon World Cup race held here on 23rd June) with the up hill and the down hill. And even with the run it still went up hill and down hill, so I kind of had a practice race the week before.”

Hursey took her first World Cup title in a time of two hours, one minute and 19 seconds, a comfortable 47 seconds clear of silver medallist Mazzetti.
