The recent episodes saw, Nick Newman calling in Michael as Sharon's lawyer to plead her case on the stand. However, many fans seem to have strong opinions regarding Michael's involvement, given that he has shared a deep friendship with Sharon's rival and Daniel's mother Phyllis Summers in the past.

On a Facebook post from Young and Restless Canadian Day Ahead Recaps, a netizen shared their opinion on Michael and Nick defending Sharon in the storyline:

Many believe that Michael should have refused the case instead of betraying Phyllis and his friendship with her, especially since she is currently bedridden from a car crash Sharon is suspected to have orchestrated.

On the other hand, many viewers also hold Sharon's former husband Nick accountable for taking her side in the matter.

However, a contrary opinion also exists. A few audience members have pointed out that Michael is one of the very few attorneys in Genoa City, and it is natural that the character might have to switch sides for his profession at times.

Did Sharon Newman actually kill Heather Stevens on The Young and the Restless? Current dynamics explored

Sharon Newman is currently held responsible for the murder of Heather Stevens on The Young and the Restless, a crime she admitted to. She broke into the Romalotti house to poison Daniel (spurred on by visions of Cameron and Cassie). However, she abandoned the plan and decided to bail at the last moment, getting caught by Heather as she tried to exit the house.

A physical confrontation ensued between the two women and Sharon blacked out during it. When she regained consciousness, Heather was dead from a head injury in a pool of her blood. Panicked, Sharon cleaned up the scene, hid the bloodied towels in one of Daniel's cabinets, and threw Heather's wrapped body off a bridge into a nearby river.

When Detective Chance Chancellor came to Daniel's house to investigate, he found the evidence stashed away and concluded that Daniel was a suspect. Daniel was arrested and then bailed by his lawyer Christine. Daniel's mother Phyllis then became involved in the case, convinced that her son was innocent.

Phyllis mainly suspected Sharon of the murder because she had previously lashed out at Daniel in front of Heather about her daughter Cassie's death. Phyllis started confronting Sharon incessantly, trying to force a confession out of her. Following this, she then received a text that was supposedly from Sharon, claiming that she was ready to confess and asking Phyllis to meet up.

However, Phyllis was involved in a car crash while driving to Sharon, which left her hospitalized and unconscious for quite a while. Believing that she had something to do with the accident, Sharon realized that she could not trust her mind. She tearfully called Nick and confessed everything to him, asking to be arrested. After she confessed to Nick and Chance, Nick brought in Michael as her lawyer to bring Sharon out on bail and defend her in court.

The case became more complex with the return of longtime villains Ian and Jordan on The Young and the Restless. Unknown to anyone in Genoa City, they were the ones who orchestrated Phyllis' accident and wanted to continue tormenting Sharon. Though the full details of their schemes are yet to be revealed, it could be likely that they had a hand in Heather's murder too.

It remains to be seen who the true culprit is, and whether they will be brought to justice after the trial. Spoilers for the next week indicate that Phyllis is set to have a flashback about her accident, which might throw some more light on Sharon's involvement in the whole plan.
