Made Hoops is holding its annual East MS Academy event this weekend in Queens, New York, and eighth-grader David Johnson impressed many in attendance. The 6-foot-7 middle schooler was a force in the paint on Saturday, powering through defenders and taking the ball to the hoop with ease.
The 15-year-old shooting guard is predicted to be a future five-star prospect and has been excellent for the New York Lightning in the Nike Jr. EYBL circuit. He made his presence felt during the Made Hoops East MS Academy, as he used his size to his advantage and dominated the paint. Johnson can also knock down 3-pointers when his team needs it, proving that he can score in different ways.
Johnson showcased his defensive impact as well, averaging 4.0 blocks. According to D1 Sports Doctor, he could make a case to be the No. 1-ranked player in the 2029 class. If he continues his development, he'll likely receive a lot of offers from top college programs in the country.
Johnson may also grow even taller and become stronger, potentially becoming a power forward or center. He has been spending a lot of time training, including with New York Knicks legend Allan Houston at Madison Square Garden.
David Johnson drawing comparisons with Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum
With his mix of height and athleticism, 6-foot-7 middle schooler David Johnson has been compared to several NBA stars, including Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs. However, he is often compared to Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum.
Johnson has been called "Baby Jayson Tatum" and the "Next Jayson Tatum" by fans, due to his playing style and athletic ability.
Made Hoops has already called him "one of the top prospects in the country," and he has yet to enter high school. It will be interesting to see what his height would be and level of play when he reaches his high school junior and senior years.
