Aaliyah Chavez, the No.1 basketball prospect, is a dominant force on the court, and off it, she is proving to be just as entertaining. On Monday, her father, Sonny Chavez, shared a delightful Instagram post featuring Aaliyah recreating her sibling Kingston Chavez’s pose.
Her brother had struck a playful pose, dangling from a basketball hoop. Aaliyah, already a proficient scorer, didn’t want to be outdone, so she decided to mimic her brother’s style.
The result is a photo collage featuring both Kingston’s original pose and Aaliyah’s spot-on recreation. Sonny Chavez captioned the post with a heartfelt message:
"This makes my ❤️ happy."
Aaliyah Chavez comes from a family with deep basketball roots. Her father used to play basketball in high school and now runs a basketball academy named "The Lab Certified LLC," where he organizes private training, walk-in workouts and group clinics.
Similarly, Aaliyah’s brother, Kingston Chavez, is a multi-sport athlete, excelling in both basketball and football for Molina High School in Dallas, Texas. While he may not have the national spotlight like his sister, Kingston has plenty of talent of his own and earned second team All-District honors as a wide receiver in 2023.
Sonny Chavez was reluctant to let Aaliyah Chavez play basketball
Aaliyah Chavez is currently the top player in girls’ high school basketball. Playing against Allen on Nov. 14, the 18-year-old scored 38 points, proving once again why she is No. 1 in her class.
On top of that, she has managed an impressive average of 37.8 points, 10.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game this season, a testament to her talents.
Chavez, who led her team to the Mamba Invitational title back in August, initially had to work hard to convince her father to let her play basketball. In an effort to discourage her, Sonny Chavez enrolled Aaliyah in an intensive workout class.
"I really wanted her to quit asking me (for lessons)," Sonny Chavez shared with Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.
"So, I kind of put her through a little workout: wall-sits and defensive slides, sprints. We didn’t even have a basketball at the time," he added.
However, no amount of hard work could dampen Aaliyah’s love for basketball. She kept honing her skills until she became the top player in high school basketball.
Now, the 5-foot-10 guard from Lubbock, TX, is on the wishlist of top programs like LSU, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and South Carolina. Although she is still undecided about her college choice, Aaliyah Chavez continues to entertain fans with both her on-court performances and off-court antics.
