Fans of Wonder Woman have reason to celebrate as James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, recently confirmed that a new Wonder Woman movie is officially in development. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly published on June 10, 2025, Gunn said that the much-anticipated movie about the Amazonian princess was "being written right now."
"We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now," he said.
This news came after years of uncertainty about the fate of any live-action movie about the iconic superhero, following the mixed reviews of Wonder Woman 1984 and the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3.
Gunn said that the script for the new Wonder Woman movie was in the works, but no casting decisions had been made, confirming that the film would differ from the upcoming Paradise Lost series, which explores Themyscira. Since the announcement of this new project, fans have been interested to see what comes next for Diana Prince in the new Wonder Woman movie with James Gunn and Peter Safran in charge.
James Gunn is best known for directing the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. He also directed DCEU's The Suicide Squad, which was well-received and garnered a critics' score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, and is the creator of the Peacemaker series.
Eventually, Gunn co-founded DC Studios with Safran, implementing a bold new DC Universe (DCU) vision since taking over. As Gunn redefines superheroes in his new part, his distinctive approach has attracted compliments and expectations from viewers and critics alike.
The new Wonder Woman movie is in development
In the Entertainment Weekly interview, James Gunn clarified that the new Wonder Woman movie would be a fresh start, separate from the earlier DCEU projects, and that it would not feature Gal Gadot, who previously portrayed the character.
Gunn further elaborated, explaining that while the movie was still in its early stages, it would be an essential part of the new direction for the DCU.
"I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us," he said, speaking of Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, and Supergirl.
Regarding the Paradise Lost series, Gunn said that it was "slow moving, but it's moving." Though it stands apart from the new movie about Wonder Woman, the series, which centres on Themyscira and its residents, remains a major item on DC Studios' slate.
These two separate projects' emphasis on Wonder Woman and her world is expected to strengthen fans' bond with the character and expand the mythology around her.
More about Wonder Woman
The Wonder Woman movie, currently under development, takes a different approach to the character and stands apart from its earlier iterations, presenting a different Amazonian warrior princess from Gal Gadot's portrayal in the DCEU.
This new direction suggests a reimagining of Diana of Themyscira's journey, maybe exploring new themes and narratives while keeping the core of the legendary character, even though the casting is yet to be revealed.
Apart from her valiant fights, the movie also explores her background and place in the DCU. From Diana's upbringing on Themyscira to her interactions with the world of men and her complexity, all may potentially be central to her storyline in the project.
Confirming a Wonder Woman movie has also generated buzz about the larger DCU. Based on Gunn's remarks on the importance of the central characters, Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, and Supergirl, Wonder Woman seems to be essential in the next movies and TV shows in the DCU.
Stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming DCU projects as the year progresses.
