Netflix’s Spellbound: The definitive guide to all the songs in the movie

The animated adventure fantasy film Spellbound was released on November 22, 2024, on Netflix. The film’s voice cast includes such names as Rachel Zegler, John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Tituss Burgess, Nathan Lane, Javier Bardem, and Nicole Kidman.

Directed by Vicky Jenson from a screenplay by Julia Miranda, the story of the film was developed by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin. The music of the film was composed by Alan Menken, famous for his work on such Disney movies as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, among others. His long-time collaborator, Glenn Slater, wrote the lyrics. The following songs were used in the film:

1) My Parents are Monsters

Sung by Rachel Zegler, John Lithgow, and Jenifer Lewis, this song sets the tone of the animated film right away. It reveals Ellian’s hardships and her struggles to grapple with the fact that her parents are monsters.


2) Step by Step

This song by Rachel Zegler, John Lithgow, and Jenifer Lewis exposes the plan of Bolivar and Nazara. The loyal ministers want to put Ellian on the throne now since she is soon going to be 15. The princess, however, has plans of her own.


3) How to Break the Spell

The two Oracles are given this song, sung by Nathan Lane and Tituss Burgess. As the title suggests, it seeks to reveal how Ellian’s parents can be transformed back into their human forms. However, before the song can be completed, Ellsmere attacks the Oracles.

4) The Way It Was Before

Sung by Rachel Zegler, this melancholic song conveys the intense grief the protagonist of Spellbound has to deal with. This nostalgic song recounts the happy old days when Ellsmere and Solon were human beings.


5) Look for the Light

Rachel Zegler, Nathan Lane, and Tituss Burgess sang this song. This piece plays when Ellian, Ellsmere, and Solon try to find their way to the Pool of Light, as instructed by the Oracles.


6) Remembering

This song, sung by Rachel Zegler, Javier Bardem, and Nicole Kidman, adds to the emotional depth of Spellbound. It is during this song that Ellian's parents start remembering bits and pieces of their past.

7) I Could Get Used to This

Bolivar, in the form of Flink, breaks out into this song, sung by John Lithgow, when he is coerced into eating a worm by a group of Flinks.


8) What About Me

This song, sung by Rachel Zegler, is heard toward the end of the film. As Ellian realizes that her parents will live separately, she becomes upset and expresses her anguish through this song.

9) What About Us-The Way It Was Before (Reprise)

This version, sung by Rachel Zegler, Javier Bardem, and Nicole Kidman, is heard when Solon and Ellsmere rush to save their daughter from Eternal Darkness. It carries across the message of reconciliation.


10) My Monsters are Parents

Playing on the title of the first song of the film, this song, sung by Rachel Zegler, brings the story to a happy ending as Ellian once again starts spending her days with her parents, who are human again.
