Actress Sharon Stone recently put American politics on blast during her appearance at the Torino Film Festival in Italy. On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, while on a panel discussion, the Basic Instinct star stated:

"Americans who don’t travel, who 80% don’t have a passport, who are uneducated, are in their extraordinary naïveté."

As videos from the film festival showing Sharon Stone's speech went viral, the internet began to debate. One commented on an X post by @AlexandruC4 who criticized Stone, writing:

"You took what she said out of context. But listening to the whole clip, I detect no lies in what she says."

Many commented in support of Sharon, asserting the importance of traveling and learning. Here are some comments as seen on X:

"Travel is the most important education you can ever give your children! Well said Sharon," one commented.
"She’s not wrong. To be completely honest. Almost all trump supporters I know personally have never left the country and afraid of their nearest major city," another wrote.
"She has a point. We look like absolute fools to the rest of the world," a user stated.

Others criticized Stone, stating her opinion came from a "bourgeoisie" perspective.

"Bro, we still listening to the opinions of bourgeoisie celebrities?" one questioned.
"No one aspires to be like her," another remarked.
"Talk about arrogance," a person added.

"My country is in the midst of adolescence"—Sharon

Stone about American politics

Sharon Stone was honored with the Stella della Mole lifetime achievement award at the Torino Film Festival. During a panel discussion on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women at the event, the actress spoke about the state of politics in the United States and its direct impact on violence against women.

She asserted on the need to "stop and think" who people "choose for government" and whether the "government is choosing itself." Referencing Donald Trump getting re-elected during the 2024 U.S. presidential elections, she added that Americans lack the historical perspective needed to recognize fascism. She remarked:

"You know, Italy has seen fascism. Italy has seen these things, you guys. And you understand what happens. You have seen this before."

Suggesting that Americans have not experienced such difficulties, Sharon Stone continued:

"My country is in the midst of adolescence. Adolescence is very arrogant. Adolescence thinks it knows everything. Adolescence is naive and ignorant and arrogant. And we are in our ignorant, arrogant adolescence."

Sharon Stone alluded to Americans' lack of traveling (and subsequent awareness about world events) and lack of education as the reason behind the lack of awareness.

Stone stated that the only way people can begin to improve the situation is by "help(ing) each other." The actress elaborated that it's not just women helping women but also "good men," adding:

"We must say that good men must help good men, and those good men must be very aware that a lot of their friends are not good men. We can’t continue to pretend that your friends are good men when they’re not good men.

Sharon Stone explained that these men were "dangerous (and) violent" and that people have to keep them away from their "daughters, wives, and girlfriends."

Alec Baldwin, who was also attending the film festival, echoed Stone's sentiments during a press conference. He stated that Americans were "uninformed about reality" and about the geopolitical climate of the world. He asserted the importance of the film industry in bridging this gap.
