Some movies are worth a rewatch, and Reese Witherspoon's Sweet Home Alabama is one of the classic romantic comedies from the 2000s that remains fun to watch some 20 years later.
The story follows Melanie's (played by Witherspoon) walk back on memory lane as she revisits the past. That includes the redneck husband she married in high school who doesn't want to divorce her, halting her plan to marry her big-city bachelor fiance. It's a "home sweet home" Alabama story as Melanie realizes that while "you can take the girl out the South, you can't take the South out of the girl."
The movie is a sweet nostalgia for those who like Southern charm in movies, family drama, love triangles, and a fresh-faced, vintage Witherspoon. Another part of Sweet Home Alabama's charm is its catchy and easy-going soundtrack, from Jewel's Sweet Home Alabama to Gwen Stefani's Hella Good. The movie features both easy-listening songs and dance-worthy tunes from some of the biggest names in country and pop music.
Sweet Home Alabama's title track and other songs in the movie explored
The movie's title track Sweet Home Alabama is an anthem that captures the drinking beer in a small-town bar and riding in a pick-up truck Southern vibe of the film. It's known as the "anthem of Southern pride," which was originally performed by the American Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.
However, for the movie, the title track that was featured was an alternative glossy rendition by singer-songwriter Jewel Kilcher, aka Jewel. In her version, she also sings a bridge that wasn't in the original track:
"You don't gotta be from down here to get along just fine/ Being Southern is a state of mind."
Sweet Home Alabama has been featured in many other movies like Forrest Gump, Despicable Me, Joe Dirt, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
