The Convert follows Thomas Munro played by Guy Pearce who gets stuck in a war between Maori and Akatarewa groups of the Maianui tribe. Thomas Munro is a preacher at the newly found British settlement of Epworth. During this chaos, he manages to save the life of Rangimai played by Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne, who is a young Maori woman and also the daughter of Chief Maianui played by Antonio Te Maioha.

After Munro saved the life of the daughter of the chief, he began to be inclined more towards Maori and slowly started to get more involved.

Munro has been caring and humble towards the Maori but in contrast, the Britishers have been outrageous towards them. This difference between the ideologies, leads to killing at the settlement. Following this, Munro decides to distance himself from the Britishers and be a part of the Maori faction.

Throughout The Convert, Munro remains calm and observes what is going on around him. He makes sketches in his notebook and refrains from forcing his beliefs on Maoris.

However, the Maori are impressed by Munro and follow what he does. Meanwhile, he gets to know that the Britishers have been using this tribal war to gain from it. They have been selling ammunition to both tribal groups, and this news comes as a disappointment to him.

He then decides to follow the path of peace and confesses his deeds from the past. However, his beliefs had not affected the Maori people as much in the beginning, as they believed in revenge. But later they eventually start to believe in peace, following Munro.

The Convert is available now, in theaters in New Zealand and Australia.
