Taraji P. Henson is a struggling single mother "who reaches her tipping point" in Straw, Tyler Perry's latest film for Netflix, which debuted on the streaming platform on June 6, 2025. She's dealt with the worst cards—her daughter is gravely ill, she was fired from her job, and it comes to a head after she gets involved in a bank hostage situation.

Straw's haunting, melodramatic survival drama is set against the backdrop of Atlanta, Georgia, where the series was filmed. Despite the short period of filming, the city and the performances from its ensemble cast captured the hard-luck story of the heroine.

Besides Henson, the Netflix drama-thriller also stars singer-actress Teyana Taylor, actress-comedian Sherri Shepherd, and Sinbad, who is returning to the acting scene five years after suffering a stroke.

The production made Atlanta, Georgia, its prime spot for filming Tyler Perry's Straw. Both the indoor and outdoor scenes in the movie were filmed in the city, which is dubbed the "Hollywood of the South." According to AP News, it has the second-highest number of soundstages in the United States, and it also has plenty of landmarks, historic neighborhoods, and more filming spots to fit any story.

In Straw, the story mainly revolves around the inside and outside of the fictional Benevolent Bank and Trust, where Henson's Janiyah Wiltkinson has a bank account. Filming both the interior and outdoor scenes of the movie was done in Southwest Atlanta.

One of the biggest soundstages in the city is the Tyler Perry Studios at Deshler Street, which was used in filming the indoor scenes of the movie. There are reportedly 12 soundstages in the 330-acre lot, which includes a bank, which was likely used for filming the interior shots of the fictional Benevolent Bank and Trust.

It served as the filming location for many Tyler Perry features, including Sistas, Duplicity, Beauty in Black, and more.

For the exterior shots of the fictional Benevolent Bank and Trust in the movie, the crew used the exterior of a real building. Specifically, they filmed outside the Prime Integrative Health building on Lakewood Avenue. Meanwhile, the open parking space outside the building and the nearby locations also factored in filming wide and establishing shots for the movie.

The movie was filmed in just four days

Besides the intense subject matter in the story, which explores themes of maternal mental health and systemic oppression, another intense thing about the project was its filming timeline. Taraji P. Henson filmed the drama thriller while she was also filming for her Peacock true-crime series, Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist. According to the actress, filming Straw was done in just a couple of days.

She told People in an interview, published on June 4, 2025,

"[While filming Straw], I was also at the time working on Fight Night. They worked it out with my schedule. I went and shot this for four days and went right back to Fight Night."

While it was a challenge, writer, producer, and director Tyler Perry also told that outlet that they made it work and made sure to capture what footage they needed in that short span. It was a reunion project for Perry and Henson, who previously worked on the 2018 movie Acrimony.
