She works for the storm deity Nalo and initially captures Maui. Matangi can manipulate bats and move on walls, connecting her to the wind and storms.
As the narrative progresses, she assists Moana in her attempt to break a curse on an island. Matangi confesses that she has been serving Nalo for a long time and wants to be free.
Additional details about the bat lady in Moana 2
Matangi is shown in Moana 2 (2024) as an enigmatic being possessing bat-like skills. She first appears as an enemy, serving the storm deity Nalo, and is voiced by Awhimai Fraser. Moana is warned of their impending tragedy by Matangi, who also holds Maui hostage.
However, as the narrative progresses, she changes from a villain to a more ambiguous character, and her position becomes more nuanced. Matangi has special abilities that set her apart. She can manipulate bats and walk on walls, demonstrating her affinity to storms and wind.
Her skills are linked to those of the storm deity Nalo, as wind is an important component of storms. At a pivotal juncture, Matangi tells Moana to follow her instincts and let go of control, allowing her to continue her voyage.
Matangi's past is gradually disclosed. She states that she has served Nalo for 1,000 years, implying that she owes him a debt. This suggests that Matangi may have been mortal before becoming a deity. Her connection with Nalo looks complex, and she appears trapped in a situation she cannot readily leave.
By the end of Moana 2, Matangi assists Moana in lifting Motufetū's curse. Despite her wish for independence, it is shown in a scene during the mid-credits that Nalo still expects her to serve him.
A brief overview of Moana 2
The Disney film takes place three years after the first film. Moana, the village's chief and Wayfinder, resolves to see the world beyond her island. She sets off on a journey to meet new people in the hopes of improving the future of her neighborhood.
Moana is joined by Maui and several new characters along the route. While the cause for her journey isn't entirely clear, the sequel promises more trials and discoveries.
There are both new and returning voices in Moana's ensemble. Returning as Moana, the daring daughter of Chief Tui and Sina, is Auliʻi Cravalho. The ocean selects her to lift the island's curse. Returning as the shapeshifting demigod Maui, who aids Moana on her quest, is Dwayne Johnson.
Two new characters are Loto (Rose Matafeo), a witty but eccentric crew member, and Moni (Hualālai Chung), a Maui enthusiast and member of Moana's crew. Awhimai Fraser plays the enigmatic menace to Moana and Maui, Matangi, while David Fane plays the sulky farmer Kele.
Several original voices return, including Temuera Morrison as Tui, Moana's father, and Nicole Scherzinger as Sina, Moana's mother. Rachel House returns as Tala, Moana's grandmother, in spirit form. Alan Tudyk returns as Moana's pet rooster, Heihei, while Tofiga Fepulea'i plays the god Nalo in a mid-credits sequence.
