In an iconic first, Kaushik Das aka DJ Roop has become the first DJ from Eastern India to hit the Tomorrowland stage in Belgium for 2024. This is a legendary moment not just for him but also for the entire Eastern Indian music scene, which often doesn’t get the spotlight it deserves.

Getting to play at one of the biggest electronic music festivals out there — like the ultimate spot for DJs — is a dream for many people. For DJ Roop, though, this dream went beyond just his success. He said in an exclusive interview with Sportskeeda:

“Representing India is always an honorable & special feeling. I think representing your country globally is the most proud feeling in the world.”

DJ Roop had a lot on his plate, with the hopes of a whole nation riding on him but put on a show that wowed people worldwide. It was his first time performing internationally, and he said it felt, as he described, “like living in a fairy tale.”

DJ Roop brought together Indian instruments and culture for an unforgettable experience for everyone, whether from India or around the world. He put together a set in advance with Indian tracks, knowing a lot of Indian fans would be at Tomorrowland’s second weekend.

DJ Roop's set at Tomorrowland was more than just a music gig; it was a chance to share and celebrate Indian culture on a big stage. By mixing Indian instruments and tunes, he connected with the diaspora and highlighted India's musical heritage for a global crowd.

His performance hit home not just for Indian fans but also for music lovers from everywhere, showing that music knows no boundaries. The reactions he got, especially from people who weren't Indian, were surprising.

The mix of surprise and appreciation from fans around the world showed how music speaks to everyone and how important it is to have different cultures represented at events like Tomorrowland.

“Their reaction made me feel overwhelmed,” DJ Roop said.

One of DJ Roop's standout moments was the Hanuman Chalisa in front of a mixed crowd. This was his attempt to stay connected to his roots while reaching a global audience. It wasn't just for him; it was a win for the Indian community, he says.

Post-Tomorrowland opportunities for DJ Roop

DJ Roop’s set at Tomorrowland was historic, but the truth is, the aftermath hasn't been all that exciting. Even with all the attention he got, he admitted that his career hasn't changed much since then.

“It is pretty sad to be saying that there is almost nothing different in my musical career yet after this,” he admitted.

Even though being called a "Tomorrowland DJ" sounds impressive, the flood of opportunities hasn't come through yet. DJ Roop's journey highlights the tough road artists from lesser-known areas have to walk, even when they've hit big milestones.

It’s still a challenge to get past the industry's favoritism and constant focus on social media numbers. He says it often keeps real talent from getting the spotlight they deserve.

He’s saying we need to change how the music industry views talent, focusing more on skill than just numbers.

“I feel people in India should try supporting new real artists, and really come out of the groupism & nepotism thing.”

Even with the hurdles he's facing, DJ Roop is staying on track with his goals. He's into making fresh original tunes, teaming up with up-and-coming artists and connecting with promoters who align with his vision.

You can see his passion for giving back through his work with underprivileged girls, teaching them DJ skills to help empower them. He spoke on his desire to leave a lasting impression beyond the music industry as he shared:

“This is something I always wanted to do in my life.”

If you didn't catch DJ Roop's set, you can watch it now on YouTube, Tomorrowland App and Apple Music —Tomorrowland Belgium 2024 is streaming exclusively there.
