Former Salt-N-Pepa member DJ Spinderella appeared in a recent episode of Drink Champs and spoke on several topics, including how she became Spinderella and the reasons behind her separation from the hip-hop group. She further talked about the 1987 track Push It! and clarified that it wasn't meant to be a s*xual song.

"It was not a s*xual song. We were literally talking about dancing on the dance floor. And people took that and took it the other way, and it actually worked for us," Spinderella added.

DJ Spinderella gave the clarification after the song was labeled inappropriate at that time of release. In the interview, she also mentioned that eventually, it became difficult to deal with people because a lot of times they were not allowed to play the song at events, due to people misunderstanding the theme.

"Being on stage and being told that, 'If you play that song here, you can get arrested.' So, there were times where that was almost the case. And somehow, we got to a point where we just had to convince everybody that this is not about what you think it’s about. And that is the truth," Spinderella said.

The track, however, became quite successful. In early 1988, the song made it to the US Billboard Hot 100 at the 19th position. It also ranked 446 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

In 2021, Sandra Denton told Page Six that one time, the police almost arrested them after they had performed Push It!.

"We were saying ‘Push It;’ they thought we were saying, ‘P*ssy, real good.’ So the police were waiting for us," Denton mentioned.

Denton then stated that the group had to explain the lyrics of the song to the authorities so that they could avoid getting arrested. It was further said that releasing a song like that in current times wouldn't have been as big a deal as it became back then.

DJ Spinderella shed light on why she left the hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa

Elsewhere in the interview, she spoke about her decision to leave the hip-hop group. Spinderella auditioned to be a part of the group when they were looking for a replacement for the original DJ, Latoya Hanson.

While discussing her decision to leave the group, Spinderella first mentioned that she grew up and realized that "certain things shouldn't be tolerated." In the interview, she continued:

"Respect should be mutual. And when respect is mutual, we can move and do whatever. But when respect is not mutual, then what are you here for? The bag. That don’t last because I can get a bag without it."

Back in 2021, DJ Spinderella shared a couple of tweets where she expressed disappointment for not being included in the Salt-N-Pepa biopic, even though she was a part of the group from 1987 till 2019. In one of the tweets, she wrote:

"Back when Salt n’ Pepa was building our legacy, which is rooted in empowering women, I could not have dreamed that this same group would one day disempower me."

DJ Spinderella further mentioned that she wasn't supporting the biopic but congratulated all the actors involved in the project with a special mention to Monique Paul.
