On August 27, Canadian rapper Drake dropped a previously unreleased video from one of his old studio sessions. He was heard telling his associate about his wish to collaborate with his longtime hip-hop rival Kendrick Lamar.
The clip began with record producer and OVO Sounds member Noah “40” Shebib and another person grooving to a beat playing on his laptop. Moments later, Drake entered the scene and explained how K-Dot would sound great on the particular music track.
“For him, where he’s at, I know he’s gonna murder this,” Drizzy was heard saying.
In response, Noah agreed and hinted that the beat was made for a possible Drake and Lamar collab, adding, “When you told me, Kendrick, it just made so much sense.”
In the wake of the now-viral video which was dropped as part of Drizzy’s ongoing 100 gigs worth of unseen/ unheard content release, the internet is having diverse reactions.
For instance, X (formerly Twitter) user @TweezySol commented on hip-hop and music influencer ALMIGHTEE’s post on the same by claiming that the Toronto rapper showed appreciation for K-Dot privately in the past.
“Showed love behind closed doors smh,” the X user wrote.
Many others joined the conversation and shared similar reactions on the platform. Some alleged that the 2024 rap battle between Champagne Papi and Kendrick Lamar possibly ruined their chances of collaboration, which otherwise would have been amazing.
“The thing that makes me the most mad about this beef, is we will (probably) never see these two on a record ever again!” one person wrote.
“Wow. I wonder why he choose to put this clip out. We’ll never hear this [heartbreak emoji],” another person wrote.
Others blamed K-Dot for being allegedly “jealous” of Drake and creating an unnecessary rivalry.
“Kendrick’s jealousy really ruined a great duo,” a netizen wrote.
“Drake wants to show us who’s the real hip-hop guy and who is full of rivalry and jealousy,” another netizen wrote.
Some claimed that the feud between K-Dot and Drizzy was not real, and probably a “plot twist," adding that a reconciliation was probable.
“Kendrick and Drake faking the beef was the plot twist all along,” another person wrote.
“Plot twist name makes sense,” another netizen wrote.
"What if K-Dot and Drake, dare I say, reconcile?" one X user said.
Notably, the beat in the video has been traced back to the 2015 song Actin’ Crazy by rapper Action Bronson for his album Mr. Wonderful. It was co-produced by Dreamville’s Omen and Noah “40” Shebib.
Later, after the release of his single, Bronson told Complex Magazine in 2015 that the “joint” was presented to him by 40, and he grabbed the opportunity and ended up making a “beautiful song.” Thus, the now-viral footage is speculated to be sometime before that period.
Exploring Drake and Kendrick Lamar's past collaboration
Kendrick Lamar and Drake collaborated multiple times in the first, beginning in 2011. Lamar was featured on the Canadian rapper’s Buried Alive interlude for the album Take Care, where K-Dot rapped:
“So blame it on Mr. OVOXO/ The reason why I’m breathin’ all the vanity I know.”
The following year, Drizzy once again invited Kendrick to open his Club Paradise tour along with rapper A$AP Rocky. In October 2012, the Pulitzer Prize winner collaborated with Drake and 2 Chainz to feature on Rocky’s single F**kin’ Problems.
Subsequently, Lamar invited 6 God to feature on his single Poetic Justice from his debut studio album Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City which charted at number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 list upon its release.
Unfortunately, this marked the end of their partnership as in 2013, K-Dot took a dig at the So Far Gone hitmaker during his feature on Big Sean’s Control. Drizzy in turn responded with various interviews, before throwing shade at the Compton rapper in his single The Language.
Since then, both parties have dissed each other in various songs, until things took a serious turn earlier this year, and led to the duo’s infamous rap battle between March and May 2024.
