Unholy hitmaker Sam Smith was showered with praise for their performance at the BBC Proms. The singer performed at the Royal Albert Hall on Friday, August 2, while sporting a few dazzling outfits. Smith's performances exuded grace as the singer left behind their trademark raunchy style to perform at the Proms. Smith was joined by the BBC Concert Orchestra and the LJ Singers for their performance.
Apart from a chic black polka-dot double-breasted suit, Smith also sported a maroon custom-made Vivienne Westwood gown with a plunging neckline designed by Andreas Kronthaler along with silk gloves during the performance. Smith's gown was complemented by a version of the Heart of the Ocean necklace from the iconic 1997 hit movie Titanic.
Social media users were enamored by Smith's performance and cheered on the I’m Not the Only One singer. Some social media users were simply blown away by the singer's "phenomenal" performance. Social media users gushed at how "incredible" Sam Smith looked and how "beautiful" the dress looked on them.
Many commented on the iconic necklace, and one social media user even called Smith the "Heart of the Ocean." Here are a few Instagram reactions to parts of the performance posted on Instagram by Sam Smith:
However, despite the overall positive reactions, a few social media users were not too fond of Smith's dress and wanted the singer to go back to dressing like their earlier days.
Unlike Sam Smith's version, the original 'Heart of the Ocean' necklace commissioned for 'Titanic' did not have diamonds.
The iconic Topaz 'Heart of the Ocean' necklace by Asprey hung around Sam Smith's neck as they performed a soulful rendition of their 2012 hit Latch in the Vivienne Westwood gown. The heart-shaped necklace was inspired by the 1997 James Cameron hit Titanic.
The necklace featured 23 carats of round diamonds placed on an 18-carat white gold chain, surrounding an enormous 40-carat heart-shaped blue topaz pendant. The necklace was made as a tribute to the actual Asprey & Garrard 'Heart of the Ocean' necklace.
The original was made at the behest of 20th Century Fox for the 1997 movie and was worn by Kate Winslet in the film. However, it did not feature any diamonds and instead featured colored glass alongside gold settings. However, after the film was released, Asprey & Garrard recreated the necklace with a blue sapphire pendant worth 171 carats and also boasted 102 carats worth of diamonds.
When Celine Dion won the 1998 'Best Original Song' Oscar for My Heart Will Go On, the singer sported the aforementioned Asprey & Garrard necklace to the ceremony. Dion's necklace was donated to Sotheby's for an auction where the proceeds went to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. It was bought by an anonymous bidder for $2.2 million.
Nevertheless, Celine Dion stepped out sporting a Vetements costume version of the iconic necklace during 2019's Paris Fashion Week.
