Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian has renamed his newly-launched women's only track league. It will now be called Athlos NYC instead of 776 Invitational.

Athlos is Greek for 'athlete'.

Ohanian also announced that the event will be held at Icahn Stadium on September 26 this year. This venue also hosts the USATF New York City Grand Prix.

As per Citius Magazine, Ohanian also announced the signing of two more athletes for the league: world record holder Faith Kipyegon and world champion Alexis Holmes.

Despite running in just three races, Kipyegon has been in great shape this season. Her addition is a huge boost to the league. She is fresh from breaking the women’s 1500m world record at the Diamond League Meeting in Paris, leading up to the Olympic Games.

Holmes has also been formidable this season. She confirmed her ticket to the Paris Olympics at the U.S. Olympic trials in June, finishing third in the 400m final. She was also at the Diamond League Meeting and finished fourth.

World 200m silver medallist Gabby Thomas and British sprinter Annie Tagoe were the first athletes to join Ohanian's league.

Athlos NYC will also feature a musical headliner with a disc jockey. The entire program will be announced later in the year.

Citius Magazine posted:

"BREAKING NEWS: More details about @alexisohanian's upcoming women's-only track meet have been announced. • The 776 Invitational has been renamed Athlos NYC – after the Greek word for 'athlete'. • The meet will be held at Icahn Stadium in New York City on Sept. 26.
“• 200m Olympic bronze medalist @itsgabbyt (200m), 2x 1500m Olympic champion and world record holder Faith Kipyegon and 2024 U.S. Olympian @trackqueenlex are the first three participants officially announced. • A musical headliner + DJ to be announced at a later date.”

Ohanian announced that his newly launched women-only invitational will offer prize money to the top three finishers.

As per ESPN, the winners of each category will walk away with $60,000 while the first and second runners-up will pocket $25,000 and $10,000 respectively. The Reddit co-founder wanted his event to offer the highest prize money in history.

He was also surprised by the winning amount at the Diamond League Meeting. The prize money offered in the Diamond League Meeting final is $30,000, with every meeting offering a prize purse of $10,000.

"I'm very happy to be the one who steps up and says, 'Here's the money.' Look, this matters. This is an amazing set of humans who you're going to be captivated by during the Olympics, and you're going to see in a whole other way at the 776 Invitational," Alexis Ohanian said.
"Every four years, during the Olympics, this is a really popular sport, and then all the coverage and everything seems to go away. And looking at the existing professional infrastructure, I did some work and then I just started DM'ing a bunch of track athletes. That's when I realized how low the prize money was and how low the coverage was and how difficult it was to even watch," Ohanian added.

The athletes who have signed up for the women-only event will all be announced before the Paris Olympics. At the moment, it is set to be an annual event.
