American track and field and Athlos star Gabby Thomas signed a deal with Michael Johnson's Grand Slam Track (GST) League on Tuesday (Nov. 26). The meet is set to kick off in April next year at the Jamaican capital Kingston before stepping foot in US cities such as Miami, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.
As per reports, Thomas will race in the Short Sprints category of the meet which consists of the 100m and 200m races. Besides Thomas, numerous other female athletes such as Melissa Jefferson, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Masai Russell have put pen to paper with GST in recent months.
Following her deal with Johnson's league, Thomas expressed her excitement to join this newly designed track competition and partner with the track veteran, Michael Johnson. She also said that this tournament would help her in competing with other top-notch athletes on the circuit. She said (via Grand Slam Track):
"I am so excited to be joining Grand Slam Track, and partnering with Michael Johnson to give our sport the platform it deserves. Coming off of the Olympics, I want to continue testing myself and competing at the highest level against the fastest women in the world. Grand Slam Track allows us that chance in 2025."
Gabby Thomas was also part of Alexis Ohanian's Athlos meet that debuted earlier this year in September which turned out to be an immensely successful competition. She took part in the 200m race of this event where she finished second behind Brittany Brown.
Gabby Thomas explains the benefit that GST will bring to the world of track and field
Gabby Thomas, a three-time Olympic gold medalist shed light on the significance of Michael Johnson's GST in the current context of track and field.
In a recent interview with 'People', Thomas stated that fans don't know what track events to watch out for other than the Olympics. She said:
"People don’t really know how to watch track if it’s not the Olympics every four years. We need opportunities to race more frequently, especially in the United States. So I think this will really help with that."
During the interview, Gabby Thomas also praised the structure of the meet (four meets across a calendar year scheduled on specific dates) and stated that it would help her prepare for the races in a planned fashion.
