The Iowa State Cyclones Wrestling program recently landed All-American wrestler and Big 12 Champion, Vinny Zerban, through the transfer portal. The wrestler previously played for four years at the University of Northern Colorado.
Vinny Zerban received the NCAA All-American honour after he clinched the sixth position in the 157-pound category at the 2025 NCAA Division I Men's Wrestling Championships after defeating Brandon Cannon of the Ohio State. In his last season with the Northern Colorado Bears wrestling team, he was named the Big 12 Champion in the 157-pound category, after beating South Dakota State's Cobe Siebrecht.
Zerban is the second wrestler to transfer from Northern Colorado to Iowa State, following 2025 All-American Stevo Poulin's transfer. Both players were able to complete their late transfer due to coaching changes in Northern Colorado's wrestling Team, as their coach, Troy Nickerson, shifted to his new job in the Army.
According to FloWrestling, the NCAA transfer rules permit athletes to enter the transfer portal for thirty days under coaching changes. Zerban has a year of eligibility left, and he will continue his collegiate career with the Iowa State Cyclones wrestling team. He announced his transfer news through his Instagram post, which mentioned:
"Next stop.. 🌪️"
Wrestling podcast 'Baschamania' host, Justin Basch, also shared Zerban's Iowa State transfer announcement on X and stated:
"TRANSFER PORTAL: Vinny Zerban, who All-American'd this year at 157lbs for UNC, has announced he's headed to Iowa State. He joins teammate Stevo Poulin, who announced a transfer last week."
In his sophomore year, Zerban clinched the seventh position at the 2024 Big 12 Championships and won the 2024 Southern Scuffle in the 157-pound category.

The talented wrestler, Vinny Zerban, impressively concluded his 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships with All-American honours and a sixth-place finish in his weight category. Through his Instagram post, he expressed his thoughts regarding the competition. He added:
"Hardest week of my life, but this is what I live for, grateful for all of my coaches for believing in me and my girl and my family for keeping my head on straight through this weekend. This season started rough both mentally and physically, i can say I’m proud of myself for overcoming the mental battles I’ve faced this year. This one was for me. 2025 D1 All American"
Zerban has qualified three times for the NCAA competitions and captured the eighth position at the 2023 Big 12 Championships during his redshirt freshman year.
