Michael Phelps' former coach reacts to teenager Campbell McKean securing spot on World Team as US champion after missing graduation

Michael Phelps' former coach Bob Bowman shared his thoughts on Campbell McKean securing a spot in the World Team as a US Champion after missing his graduation. McKean attends Caldera High School in Oregon and is committed to the University of Texas.

Bowman is currently the director of Swimming and Diving and is also the Head Coach of the men's swimming team at the University of Texas. He was inducted into the ASCA Swimming & Diving Hall of Fame in 2010 and was a long-time coach of Phelps. He guided the USA men's team in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and was an assistant coach at the 2004 Athens Olympics, 2008 Beijing Olympics, and 2012 London Olympics.

Through an X post, Bob Bowman shared his reaction as Texas-committed, high schooler Campbell McKean clinched a spot in the US team for the World Championships, after missing his graduation.

In the 50m breaststroke at the United States National Championships, McKean beat Olympic gold medalist Michael Andrew, and clinched the first spot in 26.90 seconds. Bowman wrote:

With this win, McKean, a member of Bend Swim Club in Oregon, will represent the US team at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore. The rising talent has earned numerous accolades in his career, including multiple Oregon state records and championship titles.

Under the tutelage of Bob Bowman, Michael Phelps earned 28 Olympic medals, out of which 23 were gold medals. Furthermore, he became one of the greatest swimmers of all time under Bowman.

Through his Instagram post on March 5, 2025, Michael Phelps' long-time coach Bob Bowman shared his heartfelt wishes for Phelps' son Boomer, who turned nine this year. The head coach wrote:

Phelps married Nicole Phelps, a former Miss California USA, in 2016, and together they have four kids: Boomer, Beckett, Maverick, and Nico, who was born in January 2024.

Along with his Olympic feats, Phelps has 33 World Championship medals, 32 Swimming World Cup medals, and 21 Pacific Championship medals. In 2017, he was honored with the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award, and has also won eight World Swimmer of the Year Awards.
