Notable collegiate athlete Eliud Kipsang unfortunately passed away on June 10, 2025, due to cardiac arrest. He was the former NCAA record holder in the 1500m and was considered a promising talent in track and field.
The late track star completed his collegiate career at the prestigious University of Alabama and earned numerous accolades throughout his career. At the 2022 Bryan Clay Invitational, Eliud Kipsang registered the NCAA record in the 1500m race event, clocking it in 3:33.74.
In 2021, Kipsang was the Outdoor 1500m East Region Champion, NCAA Division I Indoor Mile Runner-Up, and clinched the fourth position at the NCAA Outdoor Championship. In 2022, he was named to the First Team All-American, Cross Country First Team All-SEC, and Second Team All-American.
His 1500m NCAA record was broken in 2025 by Liam Murphy, another collegiate athlete from Villanova University. In his 2021-2022 indoor season at Alabama, Eliud Kipsang competed in the 3000m in three events and posted his season and career-best at the Music City Challenge.
He participated in the mile run at three events and posted a season career and school record at the Music City Challenge. At the SEC Championships, with the Crimson Tide team, he clinched the third position in the distance medley relay.
The late star also took part in the mile run and clinched the fourth position at the SEC Championship. In the 2023-2024 season, he took part in multiple cross-country events and registered impressive performances.
A GoFundMe page has also been created to support Kipsang's burial and transportation costs.
Eliud Kipsang's head coach Dan Waters shares his heartfelt condolences

Kipsang's former head coach at Alabama, Dan Waters, recently shared his condolences with the family and friends of the late track star. According to the official website of Alabama track and field, cross country, he said:
"We are heartbroken by the passing of Eliud Kipsang, one of the most gifted athletes ever to wear crimson and white. His impact on our program extended far beyond records and championships; he was a beloved teammate, a brother to so many and a dear friend to me, personally. On behalf of the entire Alabama family, we extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones. The running community has lost a remarkable soul."
The Adidas professional athlete majored in public health, and in 2019, he participated in the African Championship trials.
