Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown is a new Hulu docuseries exploring the mass suicide massacre at Jonestown, Guyana. Led by cult leader Jim Jones, around 900 people were directed to commit suicide by drinking poisoned Flavor Aid at the site before the U.S. Federal Agencies could come for investigations and arrest Jones.
Jim Jones was discovered dead on the scene from a gunshot wound to the head. His autopsy revealed many conflicting theories about his failing health and mental state, but he undoubtedly died after being shot in the head.
The official summary for Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown reads:
"Survivors and eyewitnesses tell the immersive story of Jim Jones' idealistic organization's final hours that spiraled into a mass casualty event."
Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown — Jim Jones did not have the cyanide-laced drink; he died of a gunshot wound
Jim Jones, the main focus of Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown, was the unquestioned leader of the American cult of the People's Temple in Jonestown, Guyana.
He initially promised his followers a better life and a utopia but kept them under his control by regularly drugging them, overworking them, and siphoning their resources. Ultimately, when the People's Temple came under federal investigation, Jones led his followers into mass suicide on November 18, 1978.
However, Jim Jones did not drink the cyanide-laced Flavor Aid drink that caused the death of everyone else. He died of a gunshot wound in the head after all his followers had systematically been put to death. His autopsy reported no traces of cyanide in his system but found potentially lethal amounts of the sedative Pentobarbital. It is confirmed that the drug did not cause his death.
There is still some speculation about whether Jones committed suicide by his hand or convinced someone loyal to shoot him instead. Many are also convinced that Jones was already in a fatal condition due to his failing health and altered mental state, and the gunshot may have been his way of going on his own terms.
What is the story behind Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown?
Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown is a new Hulu docuseries focusing on the four days surrounding the Jonestown massacre. It is entirely archival and includes much previously unseen audio and video footage of the area taped before the mass suicides.
Jim Jones was a charismatic churchman who started the cult of the People's Temple by convincing many that he could tell the future and miraculously heal the sick and the injured. He claimed to be a prophet and a messiah who would lead his followers into a utopian land and way of living. He made hordes of people pursue him and his faith by emigrating to Guyana, where he established a commune called Jonestown.
The capacity of Jonestown was said to be around 500 people, yet it had close to double the number of people living in the area. Jim Jones and his guards were known to preside over Jonestown with a combination of coercion and fear, with drugging, blackmail, beatings, and overworking the cult members. Jones also preached sermons to his people and staged many strange rehearsals for what he called "ritual mass suicide."
The people in Jonestown were also made to fear for their safety beyond the commune walls and were not allowed to leave or maintain any contact with their families in other parts of the country.
On November 14, 1978, a U.S. investigator, Leo Ryan, led a team to Guyana to conduct an unofficial investigation into the rumored human rights violations occurring in Jonestown. Four days later, Jones ordered an assassination of the investigation team, which was only partially successful. Fearing that more authorities would come into the picture, Jim Jones ordered his followers to drink cyanide-laced Flavor Aid punch and commit "ritual mass suicide."
In a released recording of the massacre, now dubbed as the 'Death Tapes', many of Jones' followers wept and protested this order but were forcibly injected with the poison. When Guyanese troops reached Jonestown the following day, they found the entire commune massacred and Jim Jones dead. The death toll was placed at 913 people, including around 304 children.
Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown delves into what attracted cult members to the People's Temple and even interviews the select few Jonestown survivors who managed to escape the town the day before the mass poisoning began.
