After the rather underwhelming finale of House of the Dragon Season 2, which ended up feeling like an episode preceding big events, fans are eagerly looking forward to House of the Dragon Season 3. With all that happened over the past few episodes, fans had initially hoped to see some big moments before the season concluded.
However, in what could have been a perfect penultimate episode, the second season left fans hanging ahead of some huge developments that are yet to come. The third season of the show, thankfully, has already been confirmed by HBO ahead of the second season's premiere, which possibly means that the actors will go back to filming pretty soon.
However, the release window for the third season has not yet been announced, and given the elaborate procedure the show goes through, it's better not to expect any news right away.
Though fans will have to hold their breaths for House of the Dragon Season 3, a new spinoff, titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is slated to arrive much sooner.
When can you expect House of the Dragon Season 3 to arrive?
House of the Dragon is not an easy show to produce. With its multiple cast and characters, locations, and emphasis on good CGI, the show has always seen large chunks of time dedicated to the making of each season. Going by the gap between the first and the second season, it is safe to assume that it will be at least two years before the show returns.
So a safe date to expect House of the Dragon Season 3 would be mid-2026. If things go very well, we may expect to see it at the beginning of 2026, but it is unlikely that the show will manage to shoot, produce, and process an entire season before that.
What will happen in House of the Dragon Season 3?
Going by the finale of the second season, the simple answer to this would be "everything." From armies battling it out to dragons devouring each other, the third season of the show should contain some of the most important parts of Fire and Blood. As of the second season, we are already halfway through the novel, but the big things are just starting to happen.
As teased in the finale, almost all the fronts of both sides are ready for a war. It will inevitably lead to the most intriguing part of Fire and Blood, the Dance of the Dragons.
House of the Dragon Season 3 is also expected to introduce some new characters like Daeron Targaryen (who did not appear in the finale despite our earlier prediction), and some whole new plotlines.
Will House of the Dragon Season 3 be the final season of the show?
No, the third season of the Game of Thrones spinoff will not be the last of the George R.R. Martin novel, going by the pace this series has adopted from the very start. There will at least be four to five seasons of the show before it concludes.
However, none of the other seasons have been confirmed by HBO yet, but it shouldn't be an issue, given this prequel's popularity. The creators are not allegedly ready to speak about how many seasons the show will go on for.
Sometime back, Ryan Condal was asked this question by Consequence, where he stated:
"I’m not really prepared yet to talk about how many seasons remain, but we do know where it goes and now that we’re into the writing and breaking process of Season 3 — because this job never stops moving its feet — it just helps. We know what we’re writing to."
All the major characters of the show are expected to reprise their roles till the series concludes, much like Game of Thrones.
House of the Dragon Season 2 is now streaming on Max.
