The 2018 stabbing death of high school student Danyna Gibson at the hands of her classmate, Tanaya Lewis, had brought the small town of Warren to a standstill. Tanaya Lewis fatally stabbed Gibson four times with a kitchen steak knife during their Economics class in school.

The attack reportedly took place over a mutual male friend who had been dating both girls at the same time. Tanaya Lewis pleaded no contest to charges of premeditated first-degree murder, according to CBS News. Lewis was handed 27 to 60 years in prison and is presently incarcerated at the Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility, according to prison records.

Episode 5 of the second season of the Mean Girl Murders revolves around Danyna Gibson's murder. The official synopsis reads,

"At a Warren, Michigan, high school, it's the smart, ambitious kids who rule the school. Two of the best and brightest are seniors, Danyna Gibson and Tanaya Lewis. And when they compete for more than just grades, the results turn deadly."

Why did Tanaya Lewis kill Danyna Gibson?

The 16-year-old Danyna Gibson, a student of the Fitzgerald High School in Warren, was brutally stabbed to death by her former friend and classmate, the 17-year-old Tanaya Lanay Lewis. The murder was allegedly over a male friend who had been dating both girls, per the Detroit Free Press.

The school resource officer noted an incident in the school building around 8:30 am on September 12, 2018. He rushed to find Gibson stabbed four times - twice in the back and twice in her chest. Having received cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Danyna Gibson was taken to the St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, wherein she was declared dead at 9:24 am local time, per ABC News.

Danyna Gibson was a straight-A student and an athlete, part of the school marching band, color guard, and cross-country team. Her classmate and fellow National Honors Society member, the 17-year-old Tanaya Lewis, had allegedly brought a kitchen steak knife to school.

The stabbing took place in the Economics class, where Lewis reportedly smiled and laughed as she chased Gibson with the knife. There had been at least 25 witnesses and the teacher present when the incident took place. There had allegedly been no altercation preceding the attack, making it a surprise to the victim as well.

The New York Post reported that Lewis threatened to kill Gibson as the teacher tried to remove her from the classroom. While all the students in the class fled the scene out of fear, Tanaya stayed back and was eventually escorted to the principal's office.

The Detroit Free Press further reported that there were no metal detectors in the school premises to avoid such a situation.


Where is Tanaya Lewis now?

Tanaya Lewis (17) was tried as an adult in the state of Michigan per laws in homicide cases. She was charged with first-degree premeditated murder and held in the county jail without a bond.

According to CBS News, she pleaded no contest to the charges, which made her eligible for the possibility of parole. Per the Detroit Free Press, she received 27 to 60 years in prison with credit for the 735 days already served. Tanaya is currently incarcerated at the Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility.
