Terrarium, the ninth episode of season 3, was mostly about Lieutenant Erica Ortegas. At the start of the episode, a wormhole traps Erica on a barren planetoid with a hurt female Gorn.

As the planet heats up, Erica and the Gorn form an unlikely partnership for survival, using their skills and resources to stay alive. They communicate through rudimentary technology and work together to signal the Enterprise for rescue.

But things go horribly wrong when Lieutenant La'an Noonien-Singh shows up with a security team and kills the Gorn right away, not realizing the connection Erica had made with the alien.

At the end of the episode, Metron says that the whole thing was a test to see if "barbaric" species could get over their fear and work together.
