Colin Farrell's character, John Sugar, makes a significant decision toward the end of Apple TV+'s series Sugar, setting the stage for potential follow-ups. Initially, the series presents itself as a typical detective drama, with the titular character investigating a young girl's disappearance and meeting his friend Henry.

However, as the series progresses, it becomes clear that there is much more to John's character and the narrative.

In the sixth episode, Sugar reveals a major twist: John Sugar and his fellow members of a polyglot society are aliens. Although their primary mission is to observe humans, he becomes deeply involved in their investigative pursuits. He eventually uncovers the truth behind Olivia's disappearance, but his actions have serious repercussions for him and his alien team.

What happens at the end of Sugar season 1?

John manages to find evidence that hints at Henry’s involvement in Pavich’s crimes when he tries investigating them. Although he witnessed atrocious acts by Pavich, there was nothing he could do since he strictly followed instructions meant for reporting without intervening.

This strong difference in how John looks at life when compared with Henry emphasizes that there is a struggle within as he starts feeling sympathy for people.

In the last episode, John finds something important in Henry's possession: Djen's dress. With this revelation, we learn that, rather than being just an observer, Henry actively participated in the kidnapping of John's sister, thereby marking a turning point in our understanding of who he is.

This revelation forces John to acknowledge that Henry was inclined towards evil even before coming to live on earth, hence his partnership with a criminal like Pavich.

Did Sugar eventually meet Henry?

Yes, he did, but it was not straightforward at all. In the final episodes, John delves deeper into the mystery surrounding Olivia’s disappearance, only to discover that Henry (played by Jason Butler Harner) has a far more sinister role than previously thought.

Just like John, Henry is an alien sent to Earth to monitor human behavior. Nevertheless, unlike him, following this mission would lead him down a darker path.

Does Sugar get to know if his sister is alive?

By the end of the first season, it is still not clear whether Djen is alive or dead. The discovery of Djen’s dress in Henry’s closet gives John hope that she might still be living, which is why he decides to stay on Earth rather than go with his alien brethren.

This unresolved aspect remains one of the biggest questions left unanswered, making it possible for Djen’s fate to become the central plot of this TV series if its second season gets approved by Apple TV+.

The decision that John makes to remain on Earth comes from deepening his ties with humanity and trying to find his sister. Throughout the show, John learns from being around humans that he has both good and bad sides, just as any other human being.

Understanding this better pushes him into seeking out more about Djen, although this may come along with other risks and complications.

The last part of the series is full of suspense and hope. John chooses to stay on Earth, which implies that there will be more action ahead. The conversation between Sugar and Henry highlights the contrasting themes of humanity and detachment.

As fans await news of a potential second season, the first season's finale leaves them with a blend of answered questions and lingering mysteries.
