Following its release in early December 2024, Marvel Rivals took the streaming community by storm, and many creators, like xQc, Sinatraa, Ninja, and Timothy "TimTheTatman," shifted their focus to playing the NetEase title. Fast forward to June 2025, and amid claims of a toxic community and frequent teammate sabotage, the game's popularity seems to have taken a blow.
When the free-to-play game first hit the stores, it managed to attract over 10 million players in just 72 hours, and hit 20 million within two weeks. The number of concurrent players reached its peak in January 2025 at 644,000 (during the game's Season 1). As of April-May, though, that number went down by almost 77%, to around 160,000.
TimTheTatman, who has invested about 650 hours playing the game, recently touched on a shift within the Rivals community, calling it "worse" than Overwatch in terms of toxic players:
"I've been through the Overwatch community, and they get pretty toxic... I do have to say, [Rival's] community... they're worse, bro. They're worse than Overwatch."
Timothy's stream hours playing Overwatch are nearly thrice as much as his time playing Rivals. The two games have been frequently compared due to their similarities in gameplay styles, team structures, roles, and character abilities. The streamer spoke from experience, comparing the two games' match lobbies:
"You know what's insane? When I went back on Overwatch, everyone was, like, normal. And then when I load up Marvel, everyone's toxic, it's bizarre."
"Yelling in the mic, screaming at each other...": TimTheTatman compares the Marvel Rivals and Overwatch communities
In early June 2025, long-time TimTheTatman collaborator Tyler "Ninja" Blevins spoke about similar issues with the Marvel Rivals community. He mentioned instances of unfair criticism, name-calling, harassment, AFKs, and purposeful trolling that ruined ranked games, ultimately leading to him shifting away from Rivals content.
Like Ninja, Timothy, whose YouTube uploads playing the game have become increasingly scarce, shared his recent experiences playing NetEase's latest title and compared it to Blizzard Entertainment's Overwatch, which was first released in May 2016:
"It's like all the Overwatch people that are playing still are like, chill, and normal. And then you boot up Marvel and everyone's like 'AHHH,' like, just yelling in the mic, just screaming at each other, doin' whatever."
In other news, TimTheTatman’s head moderator issued a report against former FaZe member Cloakzy’s Marvel Rivals account for allegedly "throwing" a game.
