Napheesa Collier teams up with Breanna Stewart to brainchild the 'Unrivaled' 3x3 league

The cat is out of the bag with Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart's new basketball league hitting the newswires. "Unrivaled": A women's 3x3 basketball league has been reported to begin in January 2025, during the off-season of the WNBA.

Initially reported by Shams Charania, what is more intriguing about this league is that it boasts a higher salary for women's basketball players compared to the WNBA.

“This league will be run opposite of the WNBA season. The average salary in the WNBA is $120K… The salary in this ‘Unrivaled’ league is going to be about double that."

Going by that, the 'Unrivaled' league may have an average salary of $240,000.

In a separate report by Yahoo! Sports, this brainchild of Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart was supposed to begin January this year but has to be moved back a year due to a few circumstances regarding the collective bargaining agreement of WNBA players opting to spend time in foreign leagues during the off-season.

Many have compared NBA and WNBA players' salaries, and the disparity is significant. Now that women's basketball is gaining popularity due to the infusion of new players such as Angel Reese, Cameron Brink, and Caitlin Clark, Napheesa Collier believes that female athletes ought to be compensated fairly.

“It's trying to build that generational wealth for these women,” Collier said in Yahoo! Sports. “We deserve it. We've worked so hard to get to this point. People before us deserved it, too. We're just now in an opportunity where we can actually execute it and give it to players more than ever before.”

Who will be playing in Unrivaled? Napheesa Collier clarifies

With the news of 'Unrivaled' rolling out to feed basketball aficionados in January 2025, there are questions on who will be participating in this tournament. The participation of big names like Diana Taurasi, Sabrina Ionescu, Kelsey Plum and even star rookie Caitlin Clark is what fans want to know.

According to Napheesa Collier, she has been working behind the scenes and promises that their favorite women's basketball stars are all invited and interested in participating.

“Any person that you can think of, that is the best in the [WNBA] that you think is a great player, we've gone after them,” Collier said. “That can give you a little bit of an idea.”

Aside from the main 3x3 basketball action, Unrivaled will also feature a 1-on-1 tournament, which is going to be their mid-season attraction.
