An X, formerly Twitter, account has gotten the ire of Caitlin Clark fans for allegedly downplaying the Indiana Fever star’s accomplishments and impact. Roughly a week ago, the account mentioned this year’s rookies, minus Clark, and the upcoming collegiate class making "an exciting future for the league.” On Monday, the trendyhoopstars took it a step further.
Instead of waiting for the future, the statement boldly declared that the “future is now.” The photos included collegiate stars Paige Bueckers of UConn and JuJu Watkins.
Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso of the Chicago Sky and Rickea Jackson and Cameron Brink of the LA Sparks appeared in the collection too.
The post took a beating from even non-Caitlin Clark fans:
“Your bait ain't even good anymore”
One said:
“you forgot to put the top dawg of this next generation but it’s okay”
Another commented:
“Bro no Caitlin Clark. U disgust me, bro”
Yellowwhar4ever didn't hold back:
“Should change your name to "I Talk S**ts" instead, that's more fitting to your sh**ty posts.”
Another reacted:
“What a pathetic account… you’re an agenda-pushing pos what a genuinely weird person you are”
Caitlin Clark is the near-unanimous Rookie of the Year winner in 2024 and fourth in the MVP voting. She led the Indiana Fever to their first playoff appearance since 2016 and set multiple franchise and league records. So, excluding her from any list of future and present WNBA stars didn’t sit well among most basketball fans.
Caitlin Clark’s popularity and impact were backed by viewership numbers
Before the season started, a handful of WNBA teams, including the dethroned champs Las Vegas Aces, changed venues for Indiana Fever games.
Caitlin Clark hadn’t played a minute of pro basketball, yet the demand for tickets skyrocketed. The trend continued throughout the season as Clark’s team set attendance and viewership records.
The WNBA Rookie of the Year’s popularity was even more apparent in the playoffs, based on viewership numbers. Per multiple reports, Game 1 of the Sun-Fever series garnered 1.8 million views. Game 2 went up to 2.5 million views.
In contrast, the Aces-Liberty series, a rematch of last year’s Finals, drew 929K views, while Game 5 of the Lynx-Liberty title contest had 2.15 million views. Some social media sites downplay or even deny Clark’s impact, but the numbers don’t lie.
