Caitlin Clark continued her rookie season in Sunday's game between the Indiana Fever and the Atlanta Dream. The Rookie of the Year frontrunner began the game by scoring on her first attempt from 3. Clark seemed in great rhythm, moving well with and without the ball, causing some early trouble for Atlanta with her pick-and-roll game with Aliyah Boston.
She had two dimes to go with her three points midway through the first frame, making one of her two shot attempts with a travel violation turnover. Clark couldn't it going after that play. Missing one more shot and committing an offensive foul as she tried creating separation from her primary defender.
Clark's struggles continued to start the second quarter after she missed her third field goal attempt from 3. However, that mini-slump didn't last long as she knocked her fifth attempt down with another step-back 3.
With her shots not falling and Jordin Canada doing a solid job on her defensively, Clark played primarily as a facilitator for most of the second frame. The ROY favorite seemed frustrated throughout the first half because of that, and the box scores reflected her underwhelming outing.
She played every minute of the first half but tallied only six points and committed six of the team's 13 turnovers.
Caitlin Clark began the second half with another missed shot from deep as Indiana endured an 0-8 run to go down 56-44. Her first make after the second quarter came via a layup, a much-needed one, with the Fever down 57-44.
Clark's issues from the 3-point range continued, though. She air-balled the second attempt she could launch after her made layup early in the half. Clark started looking more aggressive later as she got to the free-throw line for the first time in the game with 3:14 left in the third.
She made consecutive shots for the first time in the game after knocking a 3 over Jordin Canada with 49 seconds left in the third quarter. She followed that up by getting a pair of free throws with the Fever in the bonus. Clark finished the third quarter with better production than the first two.
Caitlin Clark began the fourth by making her first attempt from deep to tie the game at 69-69. Clark drove and made a layup after missing her second shot from 3 in the fourth. She was again struggling to get separated and seemingly getting fatigued after playing every minute of the contest until that point.
Clark relied on her gravity to make an impact down the stretch in the fourth after he continued struggles with shrugging Canada off. She added five points and five assists to her total before the game went into overtime tied 90-90. Clark recorded her 14th double-double of the year with 20 points and 10 assists heading into OT, registering another franchise record.
Akin to the fourth quarter, Caitlin Clark began the scoring in overtime, starting things off with a midrange jumper. She played the rest of the overtime period as a facilitator again, adding a couple more assists to her tally.
She hit crucial free throws with 23 seconds left to give the Fever a 102-98 lead, their largest lead since the first three minutes of the quarter. Clark nailed two more free throws with 4.5 seconds left to close the deal and give the Fever a 104-100 OT win. Here are Clark's stats from tonight:
