Caitlin Clark played the final regular season game of her rookie year on Thursday, when the Indiana Fever faced the Washington Mystics at the Capitol One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Clark started the game off in the right way, recording an assist to teammate NaLyssa Smith on the very first possession. She followed it up immediately by grabbing a defensive rebound on the other end.
The Rookie of the Year frontrunner missed her first shot but made up for it by grabbing two more defensive boards as well as nailing a 3-pointer with just a little over seven minutes remaining in the first quarter. Clark was subbed out with a minute-and-a-half left in the opening frame.
Before being subbed, she recorded four defensive boards, two assists, one steal and six points.
Caitlin Clark was not subbed in until the six-and-a-half minute mark, but the rest of the first half was quiet for her as she recorded only two more points and dished three more dimes. Indiana entered the halftime break trailing 52-45.
Caitlin Clark started the third quarter with an error, turning the ball over to the Mystics’ Ariel Atkins. This resulted in a bucket for Washington but Clark made up for it on the succeeding possession. She found Aliyah Boston for her sixth assist of the game.
Clark was relatively quiet on offense for the rest of the quarter and did not score any points. However, she did get two more assists and grabbed one more rebound before being subbed out with a little over five minutes left. She would not be subbed in again for the rest of the game.
The Fever attempted to make a comeback without their star rookie but ultimately fell short by one point (92-91). Clark’s first regular season ended on a loss but she remains the clear favorite to win Rookie of the Year.
The Fever also secured a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
Caitlin Clark stats tonight
This was the first time Clark failed to reach double-figure scoring since the WNBA took a break for the Olympics. Prior to the month-long break, she had finished a game with single-digit points four times. Her lowest output was a three-point game against the New York Liberty on June 2.
The Liberty have held Clark to single digits twice this season. Aside from her three-point performance, she only registered nine points against New York on May 16.
