The Angel Reese-Caitlin Clark rivalry has been one of the most talked about storylines in American sports over the last six months. Both WNBA rookies have had extraordinary starts to their professional careers and have built loyal and passionate fanbases. Unfortunately, as was the case on Monday, fans can sometimes cross the line.
Well-known sports reporter and writer Julia Poe found herself receiving some vulgar comments from a fan on social media this week. Poe covers the Chicago Sky and Chicago Bulls for the Chicago Tribune and has been closely following Angel Reese's growth and progress in the WNBA.
After the fan made a homophobic comment, Poe responded with the following:
"Why am I getting called a dyke more covering the WNBA than the NBA this year what happened to the country I loved"
The fan diverted the feed to a Caitlin Clark-related narrative, claiming Reese quit because she was "scared" of the Indiana Fever guard.
Angel Reese suffered an unfortunate season-ending wrist injury against the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday, Sept. 6. This was the basis of the user's insults. However, the post from the fan has now been taken down as it violated X rules.
Angel Reese speaks out against threats and harassment she has received from some fans
Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark have made headlines due to their strong performances on the court. Along with that fame, however, Reese said she has had to endure harassment and threats.
In an episode of her new podcast, Unapologetically Angel, the Sky forward touched on some serious issues.
"Caitlin is an amazing player and I've always thought she was an amazing player ... So I think it's really just the fans -- her fans, the Iowa fans, now the Indiana fans -- that are, like, they ride for her and I respect that, respectfully, but sometimes it's very disrespectful. I think there's a lot of racism when it comes to it and I don't believe she stands on any of that," said Reese.
"But when it comes to death threats, like, I'm talking about people have come down to my address, following me home, it's come down to that."
She further highlighted how far some fans have gone.
"Multiple occasions, people have made AI pictures of me naked, literally. They have sent it to my family members."
Reese and Clark have developed a great rivalry on the court that dates back to their college days. They have both spoken of their respect for one another on several occasions, making it sad that their fans are putting their rivalry in a bad light.
