Paige Bueckers is revered as one of the most promising WNBA prospects and was viewed as a strong competitor to Caitlin Clark. Despite two seasons marred by injury setbacks, basketball fans are still looking forward to her imminent arrival in the professional league.
Amid all the praise Clark has garnered, her fans got rattled when a Bueckers fan pointed out her historical NCAA record.
During her first year playing for the Huskies, Bueckers averaged 20.0 points (52.4% shooting), 5.7 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game. It was an incredible showing that earned her the 2021 Naismith College Player of the Year award as the first female athlete to do so.
In response to the post by X user 'i love my team' (@statstimmy), several Caitlin Clark fans had a few words to say.
"And Clark ended her season more recently."
Some X users pointed out some of Paige Bueckers' lowlights in her collegiate career. Meanwhile, others argued that despite the accomplishments of Bueckers, Caitlin Clark is still the face of women's basketball.
"She proceeded to get absolutely cooked by Aari McDonald in the Final Four," this fan posted.
"Good for Bueckers. It's still Caitlin Clark's world," this fan wrote.
"No matter how you try to elevate other people. Caitlin Clark is the MJ of women's basketball. No amount of copium will change that," the fan posted.
"Lmao she went to UCONN that's why we all know CC deserved it more," another fan posted.
The comparisons will remain, which sets up a great opportunity for Bueckers and Clark to match up against one another in the WNBA someday.
Caitlin Clark praised Paige Bueckers' work ethic
During an interview with CT Insider's Maggie Vanoni, the Fever guard praised Paige Bueckers for consistently working to improve her craft.
"[Paige] has always been able to go up against the best whether it's internationally, whether it's in the college game, whether it was high school, like she's always been able to match the talent, if not be better every single time she steps on the floor. I admire the way she works and the way she trains. She just thrives in those opportunities ..."
Back when Clark was still playing in the NCAA, they were viewed as two of the most electric point guards in women's college basketball. The shotmaking capabilities are there for the two, alongside their knack for playmaking and rebounding on the court.
Injuries are a normal thing to go through for any athlete and Bueckers made sure that she wouldn't be slowed down by it after missing the entirety of her junior year due to a torn ACL.
With an opportunity to finish her collegiate career strong, the UConn guard is taking that challenge headstrong.
