Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh didn’t hold back after his team was handed a 27-point thrashing by the Indiana Fever on their home court Saturday. It marked the Sky's second blowout loss to the Fever this season, following a 35-point defeat on May 17.
The Sky were completely outclassed in the high-stakes matchup, showing little fight throughout the contest. Their starting unit shot a dismal 8 of 29 from the field, less than 30%, while the team overall managed just 32% shooting. The Fever dominated the glass, winning the rebounding battle 32-20 and outscoring Chicago 18-11 in second-chance points.
Reacting to his team’s collapse, coach Marsh emphasized the need for greater consistency and urgency. He acknowledged that the Sky must step up and simply be better as they fell to a 2-5 record on the season.
"I think we just got to be consistent and persistent in playing the style of basketball that we want to play," Marsh told reporters. "We can't that waiver from game to game. We need to generate that consistency there and I think we will.
"We've seen the blueprint of what it looks like when it's clicking. We just need to do that on a consistent basis. We all got to step up and be better and that starts with me. I got to be better for our players."
Chicago has already endured three losses by margins of 25 points or more just seven games into the season, a glaring indication of the struggles the franchise is facing. These lopsided defeats underscore the urgent need for improvement across all areas if the team hopes to turn its season around.
More trouble for Chicago Sky as Courtney Vandersloot injury
Courtney Vandersloot sustained a non-contact knee injury in the first quarter against the Indiana Fever and was forced to leave the game. Following the loss, Tyler Marsh openly admitted that the injury to their veteran point guard had a significant psychological impact on the team and shifted the momentum in favor of the opposition.
"Our hearts are with Sloot," Marsh said. "When she went down, it kind of took the energy out of building a little bit on our side and it was tough for us to regroup from that."
Up next, the Sky are set to take on the undefeated defending champions, the New York Liberty, who have been playing exceptional basketball this season. The matchup offers Chicago a prime opportunity to rise to the occasion, deliver their strongest performance yet and potentially secure a morale-boosting win that could turn their season around.
