Indiana Fever assistant coach Austin Kelly reached a major milestone as his team defeated the Chicago Sky on the road this Tuesday. The Fever dominated Chicago, winning 79-52 in what was Kelly’s first-ever WNBA win. He had to step into the spotlight after head coach Stephanie White pulled out of the game due to personal reasons.
Under his guidance, the Indiana Fever outplayed Chicago on all levels. What makes this victory even sweeter is that they did it without Caitlin Clark.
After the game, Kelly’s players celebrated his milestone by drenching him in water. His wife, Karima Christmas-Kelly, also proudly reacted to the Fever’s victory on Instagram:
“So proud of my guy 🥰.”

Kelsey Mitchell was key in the Fever’s victory, finishing with 17 points, five rebounds and two assists. Natasha Howard also had a solid game, recording 13 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Lastly, Indiana’s hardship signing, Aari McDonald, was also impressive and had 13 points with three steals.
Meanwhile, it was an embarrassing night for the Chicago Sky as none of their players scored more than eight points. Angel Reese had a rough night, finishing with four points on 2-for-7 shooting.
There is no timetable for Stephanie White’s return, so Austin Kelly is likely to be the acting coach for Tuesday’s game vs. the Atlanta Dream as well.
“It’s something I’ll never forget”: Fever coach Austin Kelly on getting his first-ever win with Caitlin Clark and Co.
On top of getting his first win as the Indiana Fever’s acting head coach, Austin Kelly also had a special celebration with his players in the locker room. It is safe to say that the assistant coach’s first night in charge was full of positive moments.
Speaking after the game, Kelly explained how it felt to reach such a major milestone:
“It’s special, you know. We got a great group. Being in that locker room right there at the end. It means a lot. It’s something I’ll never forget. You know, first win.”
After crushing the Sky, the Fever will now take on the Indiana Fever on Tuesday. Caitlin Clark, who has been out for two weeks, could be back for this game, as per Alexa Philippou of ESPN.
