Following the conclusion of Angel Reese's rookie campaign due to a season-ending injury, sports analyst Jason Whitlock took aim at the Chicago Sky star as he questioned her 'unforgettable rookie season.' Whitlock took to X, formerly Twitter, saying:
"ESPN says we will never forget Angel Reese's rookie season. Can someone share a single highlight? Is there a rebound we will never forget? Help me out here. Her single basketball highlight is taunting Clark 2 years ago."
On Saturday, Reese announced that she will miss the remainder of the 2024 WNBA season. She concluded her rookie campaign averaging a double-double stat line of 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.3 blocks in the 34 games she played in.
Reese also secured various accolades, most notably via her tenacious rebounding presence. Her most notable accolades include the record for the most rebounds in a season, along with a record 15-game double-double streak.
The 6-foot-3 center recorded a total of 26 double-double games and her historic rookie season put her in a head-to-head running with Caitlin Clark for Rookie of the Year honors.
Caitlin Clark shares thoughts on Angel Reese's injury
Angel Reese will be out for the remainder of the season following a wrist injury she likely suffered during the Chicago Sky's matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday. Reese suffered a small crack in a bone in her wrist and is slated to undergo surgery on Tuesday.
In the post-game interview following the Indiana Fever's home win against the Atlanta Dream on Sunday, Caitlin Clark shared her thoughts on Reese's season-ending injury.
"It's definitely sad, anytime you see anybody go down with an injury, especially people you came into this league with," Clark said.
"You wanna see her finish out this year, obviously she's had a historic year and she's done some incredible things. For me, getting to play against her, her motor is up there, if not the best in the league, she just doesn't stop working. Congratulations to her, I thought she had a tremendous year."
The Sky are currently eighth in the league with a 13-22 record and in a tight battle with the Atlanta Dream and Washington Mystics for the final playoff berth. With five games remaining in the regular season, the Sky will need to step up in the absence of Angel Reese to secure their playoff spot. However, Reese will not return even if they make it to the postseason.
