WNBA history was on the line in Wednesday's Las Vegas Aces vs Indiana Fever matchup, as MVP frontrunner A'ja Wilson aimed to become the league’s top scorer, while Caitlin Clark sought to set more rookie records.
Wilson entered the game just 11 points away from claiming the league's scoring title, and Clark was 11 assists shy of breaking Alyssa Thomas's single-season assist record set in 2023. Clark was also two 3-pointers away from joining the top five for 3-pointers made in a season.
The Aces picked up an 86-75 win behind Wilson's historic night as she finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with the Fever starting strong thanks to early contributions from Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull.
Wilson dominated early, tallying 10 points to tie Jewell Loyd's WNBA scoring record from last year. Off the bench, Tiffany Hayes made an immediate impact for the Aces, scoring eight points and hitting two threes to give Las Vegas a 20-18 lead.
Hayes kept her momentum going, while Alysha Clark hit two key 3-pointers to extend the Aces' lead. Clark’s sharp shooting, paired with Chelsea Gray’s quick drives, helped Las Vegas widen the gap.
The Fever fought back with key plays from Kelsey Mitchell, who hit important shots and free throws as the rest of Indiana struggled. Despite her scoring efforts, Indiana struggled to close the deficit, with Aliyah Boston facing challenges against Las Vegas' tough defense.
Wilson had a quiet second quarter before nailing a 17-foot pull-up jumper to officially break the scoring record, reaching 941 points. The Aces had a 41-32 lead at halftime, with Wilson leading all scorers with 12 points.
Mitchell scattered seven points in the third quarter to lead the Fever in scoring. However, the Aces maintained their lead with contributions from Gray and Kelsey Plum, who hit a couple of 3-pointers.
The quarter ended with the Aces ahead by seven, 64-57, despite a last-second tip-in by NaLyssa Smith.
Indiana continued struggling with turnovers and missed free throws in the fourth, while the Aces capitalized on offensive rebounds and defensive stops.
Fagbenle had a few timely shots to keep the Fever at bay, but the Aces’ consistent scoring led by Wilson retained the lead for the defending champions.
Alysha Clark drilled a late 3-point dagger for the 86-75 Aces victory.
Clark had 16 points and six assists for the Fever, who have yet to win against the Aces this season. She went 1-for-10 from deep, marking her fifth game this season, the second against the Aces, where she made just one 3-pointer.
Mitchell had a team-high 24 points for the Fever.
Alysha Clark, Tiffany Hayes and Chelsea Gray had 14, 12 and 11, respectively, for the Aces.
