Sherly Swoopes dropped her reaction to Caitlin Clark's latest achievement. The WNBA icon appeared on the latest episode of the Gil's Arena podcast, where she expressed her views on the Indiana Fever star becoming the first woman basketball player to win the TIME Magazine's Athlete of the Year title.
A fan clipped the segment featuring Swoopes' reaction and uploaded it on X, formerly Twitter. The panel discussed other potential candidates besides Caitlin Clark, and Swoopes mentioned A'ja Wilson.
"You can put A'ja Wilson in there!"
Before Swoopes named Wilson, Josiah Johnson, one of the hosts on the podcast, asked the WNBA icon for her reaction to Caitlin Clark's achievement and she applauded the Fever star in her answer.
"I don't think I am surprised. I am curious to know who the other candidates were, but the fact that she's the very first WNBA player to ever win TIME Magazine Athelete of the Year is pretty special," Swoopes said.
She then expressed her curiosity about the criteria for winning the title — whether it was based on player performance or their impact on the game in a year. Johnson and Gilbert Arenas discussed previous winners, naming great athletes like LeBron James and Lionel Messi.
Caitlin Clark's TIME Magazine interview left Sherly Swoopes speechless
After Swoopes praised Caitlin Clark for winning the Athlete of the Year award and benefiting the league, Josiah Johnson reported a segment from the Indiana Fever star's interview with TIME. In the interview, Clark discussed her privileges as a white woman and called for the upliftment of Black women in the sport.
"I want to say I’ve earned every single thing, but as a white person, there is privilege. A lot of those players in the league that have been really good have been Black players. This league has kind of been built on them," Clark said in her TIME magazine interview.
"The more we can appreciate that, highlight that, talk about that, and then continue to have brands and companies invest in those players that have made this league incredible, I think it’s very important. I have to continue to try to change that. The more we can elevate Black women, that’s going to be a beautiful thing."
Sherly Swoopes was left speechless as she did not comment on Clark's words when Johnson asked for her reaction.
